Talk to me about taking food on a plane, please!

We will be taking a toddler and two children on a flight around tea time and airline don't do meals anymore.

We can buy sandwiches etc on board but I expect they will be very expensive and low quality so I would prefer to take our own.

Does anyone know what food can go through security and onto the plane? I know we'll have to buy drinks airside but what about the toddlers milk in a bottle? Can this be more than 100ml but we'll have to taste it or is this a rumour I've heard?

Many thanks for any info given.

you can take any food but no liquid (they do make you taste the milk) depending what airport you are going from you can call boots airside and they will reserve cartons of baby milk for you.
You need to check the rules of the country you are flying to as you can't take food into some countries. If this is the case give any left over to the cabin crew to throw away before you get off the plane

Thank you. She's actually just in cows milk but I want it to help her ears (terrible problems with ears at the best of times!). So I guess I could find a cafe or pub to buy the milk.

Any food is great to hear. We're going up Spain but I imagine we'll eat it all on the plane anyway and then again when we arrive at the hotel.

You can take sandwiches, fruit, choc, biscuits, cake, but anything like yogurt, jelly, fruit puree are a liquid/gel/paste so would need to be within 100ml and go in your single small clear plastic bag. Buy yogs, milk, juice airside (but not on board) - WHSmith or Boots are not more expensive than usual.

You can take milk for small children through security, but will have to taste it - so its easier to take an empty bottle and buy airside. If you want warm milk, you can just get a plain warm milk at Costa/Starbucks

i don't think spain care too much (probably can't take meat or fruit) we just got back to australia - you have to declare EVERYTHING! and then risk them going through your suitcase so we made sure we had dumped any leftovers!

Are the plastic bags for liquids specific ones and where would I get them from? Is this one bag per passenger?

Small sandwich bag - 20x20cm, must seal, and no gusset. Full details on the rules here

I recommend taking some cereal the kids like to munch on too. I always take Cheerios for my DS 2.7 when we fly as it keeps him entertained as well as fed

Thanks for the link, very helpful.

Cheerios are a great idea ,she loves them and I'll do anything to keep her sitting still!
