We are looking for a fairly self contained resort where we can just walk to the beach/shops/restaurant without needing a car.

Have been trawling Owners Direct and the majority of places state that car hire is required. Any suggestions please?

We have stayed in Antibes/Juan Les Pins without a car. It is abut 15 mins from Nice aiport in a taxi.

Sorrento has great public transport links (buses, trains and boats) if you want to get around and actually see something of the country you're staying in.

thanks very much for those replies. i will investigate both those suggestions as they do sound good.

I second Antibes area, it's great! And probably preferable to not have a car due to parking. The coastal train system is really good and you can visit loads of places really easily. I have used www.rentrivierapropertymanagement.com a few times and they have some nice properties; they also have an airport pick-up service which is useful if you don't have a car.

We alwasys go to the resorts around Bodrum in Turkey and you don't need a car there. All the resorts have plenty in them and the transport system is great out there so you can go everywhere by these little mini buses. It really is so easy to get round.

Lake Garda. We stayed in the town of Garda last year. The hotel had a lovely pool and we were only 5 minutes walk from the centre of things. You can take ferries around the lake if you want to explore the area. You won't miss the seaside.

Puerto Pollensa - very nice area, good beach, decent restaurants and quite good public transport if needed.

What sort of things do you like on holiday? Sun, sea, sand?? Culture? Historic buildings? Scenery???!

Give us some more details and I will put my travel agent hat on - I love thinking of suitable holiday destinations.... wierd like that :)

I am like that too, I always wanted to be a travel agent when I was younger Wink

Are you looking to stay in a villa rather than a hotel?

We stayed in Iberostar Anthelia at Tenerife last year first time ever somewhere without a hire car. It was very relaxing and there was more than enough to do wandering along the promenade, a couple of times we went a bit further and got a taxi back. Our friends stayed in appartments in that area as well that were just on the beach can find out the name if its somewhere you are interested in.

Another vote for the Cote d'Azur around Antibes, the public transport is wonderful and pretty cheap.

Coral Bay, near Paphos in Cyprus. There is a small town/village centre with restaurants/shops and a nice beach. You could probably book coach tours if you want to see a bit of the island. Make sure you look for Coral Bay village as there are a few villages away from the centre, in the hills, which are classed as Coral Bay.
