Where to stay overnight in between Calais and la Rochelle??

Hi - we've booked a hol in La Rochelle in France in the summer. Plan to drive back to Calais over 2 days. can anyone recommend a nice yet cheap-ish hotel to stop at? Where is roughly half way? Assume we will be sticking to autoroutes (unless anyone can advise better!)
Thanks!!

for the last coupleo f summers we have been driving down France from Calais.

the first time we stopped off in Rouen. Lovely place to spend an afternoon/evening. I guess that would break up your trip nicely? We stayed in the Etap - as it had a locked car park and as it was the first time we had done this type of trip I was paranoid about getting the car nicked with ALL our stuff in. The Etap was just out of the centre - but tram available to get in to the town.

Last year our stop off was in Blois. Beautiful city again to spend an afternoon. This time we stayed in an independent hotel - it was called Hotel De France et De Guise. There was no car park , but I had sourced a v good multi story which seemed safe. (and it was only about 5Euro for the overnight stop).

From reading up on other forums it seems that Le Mans is a convenient stop off for those travelling to the Vendee region. I checked it out and it looks nice too, but haven't stopped there.

I would suggest that you also post this on Trip Advisor. I spend a lot of time on there planning our trips - full of useful tips.

I have yet to sort out our fine details for summer. We are going to the charente - so near to you, but about 60 km inland. I fancy Amboise for a stay over - it looks quite pretty, with a chateau etc. But need to sort something -and our Eurotunnel etc.. better get on with it:

If you want any more tips - just ask.:) I like planning!!

We stayed here August 2010 en route from Calais to La Rochelle.... www.lalunelake.co.uk.

Its just outside Le Mans. It was fab, and also you could have an evening meal and wine... so didnt need to go out looking for food. The owners were so friendly and the food was lovely. Also a splash pool for a cool off after the long journey.

ooh I like that place. I have emailed to see if they have vacancies for us!

supernannyisace · 20/04/2012 14:44

But they were full ):

Ruthiebabes · 20/04/2012 15:54

Hi Supernannyisace, shame they were full.

Where abouts in Charente are you going? We are going to just outside St Jean D'Angely in Charente Maritime this August. We are flying this year though. This part of France is lovely.. cant wait. Enjoy your hols.

supernannyisace · 20/04/2012 17:17

We are staying in Mansle - about an hour further inland from you. :)

I like it in that region too. We were very n earby last year for a week of our hols - the previous week we spent in the Dordogne which was also fab.

Been poking about on internet since that last post deciding where to make our one night stop-off. so many towns sound lovely.

we stayed in Rouen too - the Novotel Rouen Sud which is near thew motorway in the university/conference part of the city and the hotel was fab - outside pool, play area, woodland walk (and some wodds nearby where students went running) the paly area is next to the bar whcih was handy as DC played lego/PS games while mummy appreciated the local grape juice and the food was fab! Room was big, roomy and clean and they went out of their way to accommodate the DC - even changed our booking date at no extra charge or fuss (campsite flooded due to heavy rain so we left a day or 2 early). Also has supermarkets, garage, McDonaldes etc nearby but not in site.

PiedWagtail · 23/04/2012 19:47

Thanks Pint - have booked the Novotel Rouen Sud :)

inspired by this thread I have booked our overnight stop too.

We are staying in Chartres. Booked two rooms at the Etap - for four of us, including breakfast - 119 euros! (our DS are big teens so count as adult).

just need to sort out chunnel now! And the rac cover, and the insurance, and buy breathalisers...and s o on.......

PiedWagtail · 24/04/2012 18:39

supernanny - what do you mean you need to arrange rac cover? For reocvery in France? And why breathalysers??? And travel insurance, or somethign we have overlooked??

Yes - I always take out the extra European cover for breakdown recovery outside of the UK. it does cost a bit, but feel happier having the cover.

You should check out the AA website-it details the must haves for driving in France. Some you have to have/do b law - others just suggestions.

i.e. spare bulbs, warning triangle, hi-vis vests, first aid kit, fire extinguisher (?)breathalisers (new ruling starts this summer)-all essentials. If you get stopped without can get fined.

PiedWagtail · 25/04/2012 21:03

Hi supernanny -done!! Thanks :)

The breathalysers are available in supermarkets for 1? each. Don't know how much they are in the UK.
