The age old question: carrying baby food pouches through customs at airport

Flying long haul in a few days, and need to carry baby food to the plane. Ideally I want to take pouches or plastic tubs because they weigh a lot less than jars - but that means I won't be able to open and taste them ('cos they don't reseal) - what are my chances of making it through?

Thin ,as they should not be more than 100g, I took jars in the past and they had to be tasted. Fruit however I bought from Boots. If Boots sell them ( and you are leaving from an airport that has them !!!) ring and order in advance and then collect airside

Hi, we travelled abroad in Feb and I was also worried about all this, my DD was 6 months then and I just decided to take her milk instead of food. I phoned Boots on airside and they ordered in all the pre- mixed formula for me and I just picked it up once we had gone through security. They can also order in any food you want and they seal them in special bags that you are allowed to take on the plane and that can go through security if you have a connection on the other side.

Otherwise just take your own and they might ask you to test it.

Good luck Smile

I second what rosa says, boots airside do them but might not have the quantities/types you want. if you call in advance, they will have them for you at the till.
the pouches reseal a little (with the screw top), when I last flew security had me taste one and just checked the seals on the others.

I did LH to NZ in Feb & all the pouches where fine at security at Heathrow, Hong Kong & Auckland.

Have you ordered an infant menu for the journey? They have a weaning infant option (purées) & a post weaning infant meal option too. We got the post weaning option and got scrambled egg, pasta with cheese sauce etc. Still good to have some pouches etc, but DD loved her plane food :)

Wow HipHop, who did you fly with? That sounds great. I'm with BA - they don't do food - any food - for infants (you pay for a seat you get a meal). Which is a shame cos DD2 would eat a regular adults meal (and knowing her she would eat an ENTIRE adults meal, lol!)

Think I might try with the pouches and just hope that Boots has something in if it goes wrong!

That was Air NZ - we didn't have a seat booked for her. The meals were great too - I was pleasantly surprised.

That's a shame about BA especially on a long haul flight. Have you actually asked about the infant meals? I didn't know about them initially, and it was only when I called about another matter & got chatting to the customer service lady that I asked re pouches etc and she told me about the infant meals.

Will BA heat food for babies then?

When I flew with DD1 aged 2 she didn't eat a bite of the airline food - she ate a huge bunch of grapes, breadsticks and drank goats milk (they let me take through Heathrow security).

Off the BA site: "We offer on-board bottle and baby-food warming facilities on our longhaul flights - you may only bring un-opened food in a sealed jar with you."

Oh Dear. Does that mean they only heat jars then? If they have a special baby-food warmer then my pouches might not fit. Oh bugger it, I think I will just have to lug around several heavy jars :(

Do call them to check! You may find out they do the onboard meals too. There was nothing about our ones on the Air NZ website. At least they will be able to clarify re heating ouches for you.

Check the weights on individual brands: some are 100ml and therefore permitted. Plum and Truly Scrummy I think are smaller ones. Ella's also have mini versions which are under 60 ml I think.
