Taking a car seat on the plane - how?!

I'm going to visit friends in Italy and need to take a group 1 car seat for DS. How do I do it? Confused I'm looking at EasyJet and it's not at all clear whether you can take one as hand luggage or you have to check it in, whether it's included in the baggage allowance or a 'free' extra.

Has anyone done this? Any advice? I'll be travelling on my own with 2yo DS.

Just check it in with your luggage. It's free with Easy. Depending on the airport you may have to take it to the 'awkward luggage bit' once you've checked in. It will come out on the carousel at the other end. I've done it over 50 odd times with DD3. Take the buggy to the plane and they'll put it in the hold from there as you board and it will also come out on the carousel.

Is your DS having his own seat? We take it and strap it into the seat and DS1 sits in it. I go one of those luggage trolleys and attach the seat to it with bungy cords and wheel him around the airport in it.

it is included as a free extra with easyjet, you can choose whether to take it onboard for dc to sit in (if it meets width requirements and can be secured by a lap belt) or check it in.

dc under a certain age get to take 2 out of buggy, car seat, travel cot free if i recall correctly.

as DS was 2 and needed his own seat on the plane anyway we took it on for him to sit in and he was v comfy.

you get to board near the start with young dc and the staff help put the seat in.

this was last October we travelled. i bought a big bag to protect and carry the seat which helped a bit.

DS has a big isofix thing normally, so i had to buy a suitable seat, i got the Britax prince.

hope that helps :)

Here you go: (from easyjet website)

Do I have to pay extra for my pushchair, car seat or travel cot?
For every infant or young child you can take up to two of the following items free of charge: pushchair, baby buggy, travel cot and car seat. These items can all be taken to the boarding gate or aircraft door as appropriate. You can take car seats onto the plane if you?ve arranged this (see the previous Seats section for details).easyjet.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5552/session/L3RpbWUvMTMzNDU0MDkyMC9zaWQvdE03dlhLVms=#a4

I take mine on the plane pretty much every time (mostly long haul though) - I have a little trolley that fits on it and DS happily sits in it for hours at a time. Only works if they have their own seat of course! I don't like putting it in the hold as you don't know how much damage has been done to it while it's out of sight (have broken enough pushchairs that way!)

easyjet policy is pretty good actually! I'd print out a copy of the website in case though - check in staff don't always know the rules and you'd be surprised the number of parents who don't know how much they can take with them!

Thanks everyone! I'm rather relieved :)

Just check it in, no need to have it on board. My DCs (3 and 1) are both perfectly comfortable sitting on the aeroplane seats, secured with the lap belts.
