New England Driving Holiday Recommendations

We are looking at a holiday in America this August - can go for two-three weeks and are keen to make it a bit special. It will just be the two of us, no kids. We'd like to drive around New England (flights in and out of Boston), so recommendations of anywhere particularly interesting to visit, itinerary suggestions or plugs for hotels/B&Bs/things to do would be very gratefully received.
Thanks

Well this is what we did and it was perfect. Boston to Vermont, 2 weeks there, drove down to Cape Cod for 5 days and back to Boston for two nights.

Vermont was exceptional in the fall and where we stayed was fantastic - near lovely towns, lakes etc. Allowed us to drive to Burlington, Stowe and other.

This place www.vermontproperty.com/detail/Vermont/east-central-vt-rentals/51/ was where we stayed and I can't recommend it enough. It is in the grounds of a big white clapper board house, v private and just adorable. The people in this rural neighbourhood threw us a party, brought us apple pie, one offered to take us on a mini tour (we accepted) but were all very unintrusive and polite. By the time we were finished we were driving the owner's motor tractor around picking apples for him as part of their orchard harvest.

We drove from new York to cape cod and then on to Boston. Cape cod is lovely and Martha's vineyard is worth a day or two as well. Also Plymouth and. Plymouth plantation museum is a must.

Thank you both - I'll look into your tips. Any more suggestions, anyone?

Ben and Jerrys ice-cream factory in Vermont, I had so much fun!

Many years ago dh & I stayed at The Inn at Mystic which was where Bogart & Bacall had their honeymoon.

We ate at Abbotts lobster in the rough.

Both seem to still be getting good reviews.

Oooh. It's a few years since I was there, but loved the drive up through New Hampshire and Vermont - was really lovely scenery. I'll second the recommendations for Cape Cod (go right out to Provincetown), Ben & Jerry's factory (dare you attempt the Vermonster) and the Plymouth Plantation Museum. We spent a couple of days just outside Manchester, which was really pretty, and also hit the shops there - it's a big fashion outlet place - and also had some lovely old style B&Bs/chalets. I'd definitely make sure you allow 2-3 days for Boston itself as well - Harvard/Cambridge, Faneuil Hall, walking the 'red line' freedom trail. Oh, and Salem is quite good fun too - just avoid weekends and Hallowe'en. We struggled to find a hotel on a Sunday night - worth booking ahead. I'd loved 'The Cruicible' since I was at school, so found it really interesting to find out about the original witch trials.
Have a great time!

Sorry to resurrect again, but when would be the cheapest time to go to NE. What are the cheapest flights, and is 50USD for a motel ok?

kiwijesta · 09/05/2012 10:10

I've just boomed flights to Boston and Delta is way cheaper (£200 pp cheaper) than BA or Virgin. We payed around £500 each for late Sept coming back early Oct. There is a holiday in the US early Sept too, last year we travelled over after that because prices were higher then. Have fun, I love it there and can't wait to explore more!

Booked flights, stupid fat fingers!

somewhereinsummertime · 09/05/2012 18:31

I think New England may be more expensive in the fall but it truly is an amazing sight and I really think it is worth it if you can run to the price.

Did a trip a few years ago and went in early September- means you miss school holidays and is before everyone comes for fall colours. If you get up to Maine then definitely go to Portland - lovely town with great restaurants. We stayed at the Pomegranate Inn.
