Does anyone have any tips regards best time to go price wise? We are a family of 5 who would love to go but unless we can find away to do it cheaper than I've managed to source we won't be going!

For a holiday or emigrating? If you are going for a holiday there is no point coming in Winter.
Easter and Christmas is always expensive. If the experience here was anything to go by you'll get cheap deals when the Olypics are on as there will be so many inbound flights meaning additional (and empty) outbound seats.

I know the fares go up for Christmas on December 9th, both ways.

We visited twice before we emigrated here & found April/may times to be cheaper. It is Autumn here officially, but we have some lovely sunny weather today (in South Australia). Girls are in Tee & shorts, running around garden.

If you aren't to worried about the weather (want it to be warm, not hot etc) it is, IMO the perfect time to visit & explore Oz.

Thanks guys, it'll be either the Easter school holidays or October ones. Can't come during the Olympics as DH is working there and I'm so NOT doing it with the girls on my own.

Easter is a lovely time of year generally. October can also be nice.
Get online and see which gives you the better deal or speak to a travel agent.
How long would you come for? If it would be a shortish trip then a stopover for a few days will help ease the jet lag issues.
Flight prices may also vary quite a bit depending on which city you fly to. Sydney is the most expensive airport to arrive at. Perth would probably be cheaper but then you have the additional cost of flying to the East Coast. Worth looking at flights landing in Brisbane or Melbourne.
Good Luck!

Thanks Bubbaluv. I think we're going to leave it for a few years at least so we have the money to do it without 'scraping for everything. That way we could do it in Easter 2014 rather than next year but it's still not TOO far away.

One of my dream destinations! I know BA have offers and they had some quite big reductions in January - still too expensive for me but I was quite surprised at how low the prices actually became! Worth a look and rechecking come Januarey.

ooh thank you.

We unfortunately have the Scottish Supplements to deal with before the prices of normal flights too

I have always found STA the cheapest.

We're in Scotland too, and do Australia/NZ about every 18 months, as DP is a Kiwi, with a lot of family and friends in Oz. We tend to use Qantas, as they usually chuck in the flight from Edinburgh for no additional charge (or £19, I think it was last year). The one downside of that is that you do have to use BA from EDI-LHR. :( This route is generally better for lack of hanging about, too - 2-3 hours in London, and a couple of hours in Bangkok or Singapore.
We have friends who swear by Emirates, as you can go GLA-Dubai, then onto Australia, so one less stop. However, often that one stop is 10 hours. I really can't face that with DD (3).
Also, we have FF with Qantas, which is usually worth some freebie internals in Australia.
As for who to book with, we usually use Flight Centre. I generally do quite a bit of trawling beforehand, and they will always match a cheaper price as long as they have the evidence.
Have fun!

Emirates fly direct from Glasgow to Dubai then on to AUS
It can save hours and many grey hairs to avoid Heathrow

jetradar.com is the only place I go to search flights now, after consistently finding them to find the best deals. They don't 'promote' any particular airline, but are totally transparent, plus they include the extra fees and taxes that you know you have to pay but many other 'comparison' sites leave off. This is helpful, as you can make a fair assessment of which is the best price.
