Dog chewed passport

It's not that badly damaged - just the top corner on the spine. All the metallic strips/ information/photo bits are intact, there are just a few teeth marks and soggy bits. It's a brand new one, annoyingly.
I think we should replace it - it's ds's, so would be £49. DH, on the other hand, reckons it's not necessary. However, I don't want to hit any problems on future trips with some over-zealous passport official refusing us entry somewhere.
Where can I take it for someone to tell me if it's still useable. The Post Office?

Interesting story here www.independent.co.uk/travel/where-will-a-damaged-passport-get-you-1320769.html

The Post Office can't advise you. It depends where you want to travel: EU or Ireland is probably OK, I wouldn't go long haul with it or anywhere you need to apply for a visa.

If you don't plan to travel or need it soon, it's safest to get it replaced.

Interesting article. Have read it to dh but he's now quibbling about the extent of the damage. Think I'll just go ahead and replace it anyway. Can't face the stress of what that guy went through potentially happening to us. Might be going to the USA in the summer.
