Hello, I am planning a child free few days in Dublin, mid week in May with three friends. Can anyone suggest restaurants and bars, we want to treat ourselves (first child free weekend in years for me) so looking for places where we can get spoilt. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks!

There's a lovely Thai on the main Rd that runs parallel with Temple Bar up to the Juries Inn. Will try to remember the name for you.

ChablisLover · 21/03/2012 21:45

Cafe de seine on dame street

The fitzwilliam hotel and shelbourne are the 5 star hotels around st Stephens green and are very nice indeedGrin

For something quick you can't beat Eddie rockets American diner.

I would Check out Dublin tourism website

Depends on budget but for somewhere in the city centre I'd recommend the pigs ear. Right across the road from trinity college - great food and atmosphere - reasonably priced.

BukimiNoTaniGensho · 21/03/2012 21:50

You can't move in Dublin City for restaurants and bars, it depends what you like.

Cafe en Seine is on Dawson St, its very pricy though. You should just do what we locals do, wander in and out of lots of bars over an evening!

CestTout · 21/03/2012 21:51

Messrs maguires for drinks. Haven't eaten here for a while
but Chatham Street Brasserie used to be great, early bird menus very good.

ChablisLover · 22/03/2012 12:50

Thanks buki

Always knew if began with a d. And dame
Street is in temple bar isnt it? Doh!

I used to be in Dublin lots for work but haven't had a good night out for at least 5 years!! Have ds to blame for that.

Always liked the hairy lemon too.

BukimiNoTaniGensho · 22/03/2012 12:58

Dame st runs behind temple bar, from college green (trinity) up towards Christchurch.

Its hard to recommend bars because there are so many and all different, it depends if you want posh or not, cocktails or pints, quiet or loud, old or new, local or tourist, food or drink......Grin

LucyManga · 23/03/2012 17:23

Diep Le Shaker for amazing cocktails and Thai food - not cheap, though.

AnEcumenicalMatter · 23/03/2012 18:14

The cellar bar of the Merrion Hotel has the best wine by-the-glass list I've seenin Ireland and it well worth a visit.

If it's 'fine' dining you're after to spoil yourselves then I can recommend Guilbauds - the only michelin starred restaurant in Ireland. It's also tight beside the Merrion hotel so you can nip into the Cellar bar for an aperatif :)

Can also highly recommend L'Ecrivain. Only one Michelin star and less 'formal dining' atmosphere than Guilbaud's but the food and wine are superb.

Check out the lunch menus as well...they van be quite good value for money (relatively speaking) and the food is just as good at any time of day.

Have a fab time!

MadameMessy · 23/03/2012 18:21

for nice reasonable lunch and dinner, try the elephant and castle on fleet st in temple bar.
la cave on south Anne st does a really reasonable early bird.
saba on Clarendon st does great Thai food with delicious cocktails

tbh, your best bet is walking around town, getting a feel for tho place, seeing what kind of places are around and what you fancy.

rhetorician · 23/03/2012 21:40

the winding stair just by halfpenny bridge for a fine lunch and great views (and lots of locally sourced ingredients); I don't get out to eat much these days, but Saba is good; basement in Fallon and Byrne (Exchequer Street) does good wine and you can get cheap eats from the deli upstairs; Pearl/Locks Brasserie (Upr Merrion St) is a slightly cheaper fine dining experience than the Gilbaud/L'Ecrivain one). Bars are harder to call, but Dylan;s Hotel (just off baggot st) does excellent cocktails -as someone said, it really depends what kind of thing you want. Check out Georgina Campbell's website for useful write-ups. Oh and the Silk Road Cafe in the Chester Beatty Library (just nr Dublin Castle) does lovely food too

MickyDodger · 23/03/2012 23:56

There are other michelin stars in Ireland! Try chapter one, the best in dublin.

Pandygirl · 24/03/2012 00:04

I took DP to the merrion for his 40th and we went to restaurant guilbaud. It was fantastic (but quite pricey). The bar around the corner is o'donahues where the dubliners were formed.

shubiedoo · 24/03/2012 00:12

I worked in Dublin city centre 10 years ago and can't believe all my faves are still in business, that's great! Diep Le Shaker, L'Ecrivain and Cafe en Seine are all good choices. I always liked the Ely wine bar too, just off Merrion St. Out of town, a short DART ride away, Cavistons in Sandycove is wonderful, or head to Cruzzos in Malahide, lovely fishing village. Enjoy!

BarkisIsWillin · 24/03/2012 18:02

The upstairs restaurant in Avoca, Suffolk Street is great - the shop is lovely too! If you like fish, get the DART to Howth - all kinds of fish restaurants there. Loads of great places to eat and drink in Dublin.

AnEcumenicalMatter · 24/03/2012 18:05

Micky, what I was saying was that Guilbaud's is the only restaurant in Ireland that has 2 Michelin stars...not that it's the only one with a Michelin star. But I see now my 2 was missing...sorry 'bout that!

Lockey · 24/03/2012 21:36

Wow! Thank you for all the suggestions, they are a great help. I will let you know how we get on. Again thank you for everyone who replied.

dax on Pembroke street is a lovely French restaurant. Fantastic food, lovely atmosphere. Quite expensive but a lovely treat.

Trocadero on Andrew street is also lovely. Has been there for years with a very loyal customer base. The staff are wonderful & the owner - Robert - is a gem! It's very cosy with booths, the sort of place you could spend hours drinking wine & relaxing.

Cocktails at the Shelbourne hotel are a must to start your evening!
