Flying with a Type 1 car seat

We're going to Spain in June and I am planning to get my DS his own seat on the plan as he is very unlikely to be happy sitting on one of us for that length of time.

Has anyone done this and used a Type 1 car seat on a plane?

Is there an issue with size of seat? Is it necessary to take a car seat or would it be acceptable to just sit him in the chair and strap him in Confused

Last year he just sat on my lap, went to sleep and it was fine but this year he is more active!

No idea on using a car seat on a plane, but when DS was under 2 I was given a lap belt for him for take off and landing.

You don't need to take a carseat for him as long as he can sit properly but if you do each airline has specific measurements and it has to be able ot be adequately restrained using just a lapbelt which limits the choice somewhat. He may still need to sit on your lap for take off and landing.

I've never seen anyone take a car seat on a plane. I think young children are fine on your lap for takeoff and landing and otherwise are ok sitting in a seat normally. I've done this with my 19 mo a few times and it's fine.

Under 2 for take off and landing he has to sit on your lap not in the car seat. As you are going to have to buy a seat for him to use the car seat why bother as he can sit in the seat and you can put the arm rests up so if he wants to sleep he can. If there is turbulence he has to go back on your lap with the belt . However, once my dd was asleep on me and on her own seat at round 18 mths we put the seat belt round her and she was allowed to stay there . YOu need to go on the airlines websites to see if your seat will fit / conforms to ones permitted on planes.

We decided to just have him on our laps in the end rather than booking another seat, I figured if he was on me for takeoff & landing and then he'd may as well stay on us!

Thanks everyone though.

FWIW It's very hard to find to get information for use on the plane, the only car seat that was confirmed would be ok was the Britax Prince and that's because its slim! If we flew long haul I'd def get one for DS I think!
