Lettin' the train take the strain...

It has been years since I regularly took the train and at Easter we will be going off to visit family by train.

Since I am (waaaaaay) no longer eligible for a Young Persons Railcard (if they still exist) does anyone know what's the best way to get tickets that won't cost an arm and a leg?

There's a family rail card. And booking in advance will save you loads and loads. For example, Newcastle to Edinburgh is about £50 return on the day; it can be as cheap as £18 if you book (quite a bit) in advance (and buy two singles instead of a return).

This has to have been my most boring post ever. Apologies!

That sounds promising! I will have a peek. It will be travelling London to Edinburgh but I dont want to buy a Railcard then find that it has loads of restrictions.

The railcard should just give money off. An advance ticket will be restricted to whichever train you've booked. Flexible tickets are always much more expensive.

Although London to Edinburgh seems to be eyewateringly expensive. Even 2 months away it seems to be £120 return for an adult. It might actually be cheaper to fly (and certainly cheaper to drive).

Allegedly you can get tickets from £16.50 each way, but you'd have to book the day they come out (I suspect).
