OK - Skiing roll call - who's going this year - where, when and who with?

Mo2 · 28/01/2006 11:21

Having spent half my ski holiday last year eyeing up other Mums in the chalet, thinking 'she sounds like someone on Mumsnet' but too embarrassed to ask, thought I'd get a heads up here as to whether we might bump into any Mumsnetters on the slopes this year...

So here goes...

We're goind w/c 5th March, to Tignes, France and with Esprit....

Anyone else?

Going at half term (Mon - Fri) for a short break to Engelberg, Switzerland (borrowing an apartment and flights booked independently). Then going with school party at beginning of April to Saas Fee, also in Switzerland.

Mo2 · 28/01/2006 11:35

Hi LIZS - ah yes, you're our skiing regular - I remember you giving me some useful advice last year!
This will be DS2's first year trying out skis - he's only 3.5, so I'm a bit apprehensive, but he's got a much more gung ho attitude than his big brother, so I'm hoping he's really enjoy it!

dd tried it at about the same age with mixed success. She's very fair weather dependent (rather like me ) but the promise of a hot choccy and a Chupa Chups lolly is a good motivator ! We're hoping she'll be more cooperative this year, now she's 4, and as it will be a couple of the school staff in charge of her on our second trip and she'll have a classmate with her, hopefully she'll be a bit more compliant and enjoy it more. Even so I think ski school for 6 consecutive days may well prove a bit too much, but we'll see.

picnikel · 28/01/2006 12:27

26th Feb to Les Arc with Esprit. First ski holiday with dd (11 months). We're booked into a chalet but won't know anyone else there.

Pollyanna · 28/01/2006 12:29

y trip - ds1 doing ski school, dd nursery. ds2 staying home with granny.

Merlin · 28/01/2006 17:37

Thollon les Memises in France at half term. Borrowing friends apt. DS1 first time so should be fun. Oh driving in a minibus cos parents, sister, boyfriend and son coming as well! Bit like the hillbillies rolling into town

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 28/01/2006 18:01

I'm not going this year as I can't take time off. DH is in Verbiers this weekend and is going for a non-family (and therefore mainly blokes) week in March. so I'm stacking up huge points. But am not ski-ing. guess who'll be doing all the ski school drop offs next year?

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 28/01/2006 18:04

hmmm for someone who doesn't think she goes in for emoticons that was a bit ott. reflects the depth of feeling and seriousness of the subject (don;t think I used that one so might as well get it in)

Pollyanna · 28/01/2006 21:41

Wilbur that's when I'm going! which chalet are you going to be in?

We've been there with them twice before - had a brilliant time both times!

lapsedrunner · 29/01/2006 12:52

Took ds (3.4) to St Anton the week before last for his first taste of proper skis (used plastic ones before). We just did 3 days, about 20 mins twice a day was enough for him but he is very keen to go again. Rest of the time was sledging, swimming etc.

kitegirl · 29/01/2006 22:06

just been, Sestriere (Italy) and Serre Chevalier (France), no new snow so no off-piste . can't wait to take ds next year he'll be 3!

Hattie2 · 30/01/2006 12:30

Just got back from Tignes with Esprit - great time. Tip for anyone going there - don't pay £15 to book the helmet through Esprit, the ski hire shop give free helmets to all children hiring skis.

Gizmo · 30/01/2006 12:34

Off to Tignes on 26 March with Ski Total and a group of mates. Nice chalet with hot tub, swimming pool and sauna to entertain DS if he decides he doesn't like skiing....

Mo2 · 30/01/2006 12:40

Ooh - Hattie - can I pick your brains then - we've never been to Tignes...

Where did you stay, the Lavachey? How old are your kids... what's the skiing like for the little ones?( And for the adults!)

DH & I were thinking of booking all equipment locally as it's usually cheaper?

Any other tips?

Off next Thursday (9th) to Meribel with Ski Hame. Just us going - we've failed the last couple of eyars to get organised enough to get a full chalet together - but we don't mind meeting new people in the chalet. That's part of the fun of skiing!

We'll have 9 days skiing (arrive early Friday morning, leave the follwoing Saturday late at night - flying tp Paris and then getting the overnight couchette train to Moutiers), so will be able to anjoy a few "quiet" days before and after the mobs arrive for half term.

It'll be second time ds (5) has gone skiing: he started last year and was quite competent by the end of the week. So looking forward to this eyar, as he should come on leaps and bounds.

Really looking forward to it.

Mo - we stayed at the Terril in Tignes, the Lavachey is in a better location though, v close to the lifts.

Dd is only just 3 so we threw her in at the deep end a bit but she got on really well. The little ski area for 3 & 4 year olds is great and for older ones there's plenty of gentle blues. Not much in the way of greens in Tignes but there's a few if you go over to Val D'Isere.

For adults ... whatever you like! It's such a big area that there's lots of everything.

Don't know about hiring locally as we had all our own stuff except for dd's skis and boots.

Tips .... if your kids are in snow club then label EVERYTHING with their name (dh thought i'd gone ott with labels but we still managed to lose a few little bits). Would recommend La Caleche (a restaurant in the main shopping bit) for the chalet night off - fab foundue and local specialities.

Can't think of anything else at the moment, let me know if you have any specific questions and have a great time!

Anteater · 30/01/2006 13:28

We are off to Zermatt on Fed 17th.
Lunarsea nearly persuaded us to visit Canada this year but the temptation to revisit Zermatt was just too great, this will be our 3rd visit, but the first with children.
-5 here today but no snow

Hope to get a weekend away in March, just dd1, ds1 and me..

Mo2 · 30/01/2006 13:34

Hattie - is the snow club/ supervised lunch thing OK for the really little ones (I assume your DD was in spritelets?) DS2 was in nursery last year, so it was a bit different...

skis a mile...

Hattie2 · 30/01/2006 14:41

Mo - yes, dd was a spritelet and she was fine with snow club and lunch (but she is used to being at nursery 4 days a week). All the spritelets seemed to be in snow club as well so they spent all their time with the same kids.

They spent a lot of snow club time indoors as it was v cold last week, but went out a couple of times and she enjoyed the sledging (or bum boarding as they call it!) and snowman building.

There always seemed to be a lot of snow rangers around - not sure what ratios they have - and the little ones got help with cutting up lunch etc. if needed.
