Lots of recent questions about Holiday Villages - here is my review on the Tenerife one

This might be over a couple of posts depending on how my laptop works or doesn't work.

We are family of 3 including DS who is nearly 4.

First package holiday in about 20 years as we've lived abroad and pre DS travelled long haul independently etc.

Arrival through airport once you have your bags is quick. I'd suggest double checking to see how much more expensive it is for a private taxi transfer too and from the airport. In our case it was an additional £2 so we booked it. Transfer is a good 45 minutes.

On arrival no one else waiting at check in so that was smooth - once DS got over being sick as the taxi driver was driving fast. We were taken by golf buggy to our suite. This hotel is all suites so pefect if your children are early to bed.

This hotel is massive. Lots of blocks of accommidation. No block is over 3 stories high.

Rooms large and clean. Only 2 complaints. Balcony door did not have a lock (big gripe here) and shower pressure wasn't great. 2 TVs both showing a fair selection of UK chanels including cbeebies. Mini bar stocked daily with 2 cans of fat cola, 2 litre bottle of water and 2 cans of local beer. Bathroom had a small supply of soap, shower gel and shampoo. Plenty of store space and hangers. Beds not comfy. Good air-con.

Large swimming pools. Quiet one (which is only quiet by lack of entertainment/music at other) is near the snack bar. Large pool and small baby pool. Be early to get beds by baby pool. Water clean but cold.

Snack bar here is pretty poor. Fine if all you want to eat is chicken nuggets and chips or a burger or boiled hot dog. Open from 10 until 6. I wouldn't feed my dog the chicken available but may be that was me as plenty did. Drinks on offer are beer, wine (only one white, one red and one rose), slushie drinks in an array of colours, water. Ocassional yoghurts and fruit were there too but not often.

Main entertainment pool where you can collect your beach towels (15euro deposit required and you can change for clean ones every 2 days), drinks bar serving same as snack bar drinks. Inflatables are up in this pool during the day along with fitness classes and lots of loud music. Again another baby pool and also a children's pool which is part of the pool from the flume slide split into 2. Busy area here as you can imagine. Flume ran a couple of times a day.

Toilets available and good baby change facilities too. All kept very clean.

Kids Club - brilliant facilities. Good UK staff running lots of stuff for children. Day time clubs are generally 10 -12 and 2-4. Some days have extras on from 5 until 6.30. They also do movie nights and run a mini disco every night from 8.30 until 9.30. Closed on a Thursday. You need to sign your kids in and out. Was fairly quiet when we were there so plenty of spaces available. Happy to leave DS. There is also a large soft play area which DS loved. Football grounds, a huge climbing frame area for kids over 6, pony rides. Masses of stuff. The children really are well looked after.

Location of hotel is on top of a very steep hill which makes going out quite a big task. Particularly hard if you have a buggy. Not a huge amount going on in the area but nice enough to visit. Nice beach in Playa Arena. Nice to wander around Los Gigantes but this isn't anything like Las Americas or Los Christianos so if you want to get out and about be prepared that the area is very quiet although the hotel does run a bus to Los Christianos for 3 euro return per person if you want to get to somewhere a bit busier.

The First Choice/Thomson holiday desk (one you can get past them trying to sell you stuff) has some buggies you can borrow. They also have a left overs box with shampoo, sun cream etc left by previous guests. There are also left behind books if you like to read.

to be continued.

Hotel shop is open am and evening. Selling inflatables for the pools, sweets, clothing, magnets and the usual. They do have nappies but they are expensive at between 12 and 19 euro for a standard pack. They also have suncreams and shampoos/shower gels etc but again are pretty expensive. A bottle of Dove shampoo was 6 euro.

Food. All buffets appart from the 2 nights you can go ala carte if you can get booked. We didn't bother. Buffet breakfast was pretty good. Lots of selection including UK bacon and sausages, plenty of pastries, fruits, toast, fresh breads, pancakes and eggs anyway. We were pretty happy with breakfast. Same with lunch. Lots of nice salads. Obviously not everything to all of your taste but the hotel is open in winter to the brits, germans and french so a bit variety.

Dinner was ok. Still plenty of selection but for me I just prefer to have my dinner served to me. It was very much a school dinner type thing. Lots of people everywhere, people queuing to get in etc. They ran a grill which was usually steak or chops, paella and a kids counter where they could get pasta a sauce, chicken nuggets, chips, lasagne etc. They also did a roast most days. Plain veg was a bit scarce and it was very much chips on offer but if you looked you could get rice and may be a boiled potato. It is very much mass produced and a bit tasteless but it is all inclusive and they are catering to the masses.

Drinks at the bar with being all inclusive are a bit limiting to local produced stuff. Some cocktails were good but I like a nice glass of wine. What they had wasn't to my taste at all but I admit I am a snob when it comes to wine and I know what I like. Beer is ok. You can pay an extra for premium drinks but you need to get a card signed off at receiption first. This will give you a premium vodka or whisky etc for 2 eruo.

This place is aparently for the UK market over the summer months only. Personally I think it would be hell sharing with 3000 other brits (yes, it is that big!) but for a week in February is was OK. Lots of kids doing their homework! Hotel was about hald full when we were there and for me that was enough.

Would we go back? No. Firstly, we generally don't go anywhere twice and this was mainly booked so DS was catered for. I wouldn't do AI again. If we could find a not too busy place, ie not Americas that was B&B or even Self Catering with goods kids facilities it would be more suited to us. We got bargain at just over £1,000 for the 3 of us AI for the week.

I have a map of the grounds if you want to request blocks before you go so pm me and I will e-mail you that on Monday. Any questions I am happy to answer.

Pros

Good clean rooms
Excellent kids facilities
Good breakfast and lunch
Quiet pool was lovely.
Helpful staff. Both UK and Hotel staff.

Cons

Too big a hotel. Would be murder at full UK capacity.
Evening meals bland
No decent wine
Wouldn't do AI again. This was our first time.
Snack bar food was disgusting. This closes at 6 with their being no evening meal until 7 it can be difficult doing the evening meal with young children who are used to their evening meal early.
No locks on patio doors to balconies.

Finally, my judgy pants.

To the woman feeding her toddler a boiled egg at breakfast WTF are you doing sprinkling salt on it?

To the husband and wife who were hungover and fell out before he stormed off to the bar for vodka and she fell asleep, be utterly thankful that my husband was there to run at break neck speed to pull your 3 year old out of the deep end of the pool when neither of you were watching him. I have never seen my DH move so fast in all his life. Poor child was terrified.

To the families who insist on keeping your children up until 1 am, please show some consideration when coming back to your room and keep the noise down. The corridors are not a play area, area for your kids to scream their heads off because they are knackered etc.

That's awful about the child in the pool!

I've heard some good things about most holiday villages especially for those with older kids but unfortunately it seems that NO matter where you are on the world there are parents who leave their common sense and safety awareness behind! Mind you in your case...sounds like they had none to begin with.
What did the parents say when you saved the son?

It's families like this that give all inclusive a bad name!

gregssausageroll · 03/03/2012 21:39

Are you ready for it? Cheers mate

Some people are desperate for children but will never have the chance then you hear about people like that who are privileged to have them....

Suppose you are lucky to have even got a thanks. Poor kid.
