Please can you all give me your advice...

We're off to Lanzarote in March, flying No Frills (but think it's same as Ryanair?). Can we take a buggy? Or should we hire one when we get there? Should we take our own car seat? We're not going to hire a car. We were planning on getting around on foot and by public transport. Can you take buggies on buses like you can here, or is it different?
Any advice at all really - I'm clueless!!

Thank you!

Hello! Bet you are looking forward to your hol - we love Lanzarote as we are big road cyclists. We have been twice with our little one over the last 18 months - once when he was 4 months and once when he was 15 months. We flew easyjet but they are broadly the same as ryanair (and we have flown elsewhere with ryanair, e.g to the Pyrenees). So, in response to your questions:

  1. yes you can take a buggy free of charge. You take it all the way to the plane and then they fold it and put it on board. We have a second hand bashed about babyjogger city mini we use for traveling as it folds so easily and is very small when folded. Definitely better than a 2 part buggy system (e.g. chameleon or cherry or something like that).

2.we always rent a car as it is not expensive (you can get a small car for a week for around £100, and you can rent a car seat). If you are not renting, I have heard the buses in Lanza are good. However if you are taking taxis/buses you should defo have a car seat for safety. However bear in mind you may not be able to strap the seat in on a bus. I took a 2 hour bus trip in Ireland once, with my maxi-cosi, and had to buy a seat-belt extender for £10 before I went so I knew it would strap in. Note you can't take your car seat on board ryanair flights, even if you have booked an extra seat for your infant. You also can't check it in for free - I think the charge is approx £20 each way (the charge is for "infant equipment" - we paid it to take our baby hiking backpack to France last summer). So, I would say that (assuming you can drive), the cost of taking your car seat and paying for buses/taxis would probably add up to the cost of renting a small car for a week. You won't use loads of petrol, it is a small island. Plus you'll be able to explore all that Lanza has to offer - the vineyards inland, with their delicious wine tasting and tapas (yes, Lanzarote wine is GOOD!), the amazing stunning scenery at the north of the island, the beautiful big sandy beach at Farmara (and maybe do some surfing!), delicious early dinner on the sea front at El Golfo while the sun sets, the volcanic national park...ahhhhh I am jealous!

  1. Not sure about buggies on buses, but I would assume yes. I wouldn't be tempted to travel on a bus or any form of public transport/taxi without a car seat though. The worst doesn't even bear thinking about.

You will have a great trip - the Canaries are so perfect for winter sun with a little one, because you don't have to contend with jetlag! We would really recommend trying some little restaurants here and there - the canarians are so child friendly, it is great - we used to go out for dinner early, like 5.30/6pm, so our little man could eat with us, and then after he had gone to bed we would sit out on our terrace with a bottle of wine for the evening...perfect.

Enjoy your holiday! Where are you staying? PM me if you want any more tips!

Wow! What a great response - thanks so much for that.

We've decided to hire a car (my partner has only had a licence just over a year, so I'll be driving and I'm a bit nervous but sure it'll be ok - never driving a left-hand drive before!) I've done a bit of googling and it seems the roads aren't too hideous so we'll cope.

We're staying at Bahia Blanca Rock aparthotel in Playa Blanca. It seems really child friendly, kids pool, play area etc etc and with the car we can explore a lot more. We will certainly be trying as much as the local food and wine as we can.

We're also going to get a lighter buggy on ebay as ours is a bit unwieldy.

Thanks so much again - and any other good tips on places to visit would be fab!

The roads are great. One of the reasons so many cyclists go is for that very reason ? the roads are great to ride on. You'll see loads of cyclists and lots of training camp groups out for rides! The roads are not busy. Driving on the other side is fine, you'll get used to it very quickly. It is also such a small island you won't be driving far. You'll have a lovely time down in Playa Blanca! In terms of recommendations, these are ours:

? Papagayos beaches ? they are protected national park beaches just along from Playa Blanca. You have to drive down a rough dirt road for a bit and enter the national park (about ?3) and park at the top of the cliffs and take the small walk down to these lovely secluded beaches. Amazing! Lovely with little ones.
? El Golfo ? not far along the coast from Playa Blanca ? lovely little fishing village with lots of little restaurants along the front. Beautiful for early dinner whilst the sun goes down ? amazing sunsets.
? Famara ? huge long sandy beach to the north of the island. You can drive through the wine region to get there. Can get windy but a really nice place to visit for a beach afternoon/swim in the sea/surfing ? you can rent surf and body boards near by. The pretty old town of Teguise is nearby.
? Mirador del Rio ? well worth the drive up north (stunning drive) on a clear day. Built by the famous Cesar Manrique (he designed lots on Lanzarote and you will see his name mentioned in lots of places ? he was very instrumental in making sure Lanzarote didn't become entirely developed by tourism. He is the reason there are very few high rise hotels on Lanza). Absolutely amazing views en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirador_del_Río
? Arietta beach ? really nice with little ones and for swimming. Cafe serving amazing tapas during the day! You can also park right by the beach.
? La Geria wine region. Pop into a few vineyards and try the wine, the way they grown the wine in the volcanic land is absolutely amazing. Just a short drive inland from Playa Blanca
? Femes ? small town high up above Playa Blanca (just a few miles drive) ? drive up for the view! There are a few little restaurants and cafes up there where you can have yummy tapas and enjoy the view.
Anyway as you can tell we like to eat, relax in the sun and explore ? Lanzarote is perfect for that!

Sounds right up my street! I am so looking forward to it, and even nearly looking forward to hiring that car now!

Thank you ever so much.
