We aren't sterilising but worried about the water thing. Apparantly mineral water has too many minerals in it!! Thanks girls x

Hi Yummymummy - can't actually help you but wanted to bump the thread as we're taking our DS on holiday to Corfu in May when he'll be 8months so I'd be very interested to hear what others think. Have you had a look at the thread about summer holiday tips? It't very good. HTH

if you are worried about the water, take a travel kettle along so you can have cooled boiled water for bottles. are you going to take your formula with? they often have different makes in Europe to UK so if not, don't assume without checking that you'll be able to get the same formulas in Tenereife. You should be able to buy baby food jars out there easily enough.

Are you going self-catering, or lots of meals out? Are you planning lots of excursions? I'd say allow for £400 spends for both of you, in the hope that you'll spend more like £250 to £300.

me too - taking a 5 month old and 3 yr old in October 06 so will watch this with interest.

Sorry, might seem obvious, but lots of wet wipes! Also lots of sun cream and some light long sleeved clothes. A good sun hat is good (or a bandana failing a good hat). I also found a lightweight large cloth v. useful for things like something to lie baby on for changing, draped over to shade, emergency mop up cloth, to cover if there is slight chill, etc.
Have fun!

once you get there, i'd invest in a cheap little paddling pool. We used it every day when we took 1 year old DS on holiday to Ibiza. Sometimes with water in and sometimes just filled it up with his toys and it kept him in one place.
There is one particular make of water that is very safe. Best bet is to call the manaufacturer of the formula that you use and they will tell you. They'll also be able to give you a letter (although this might be unnecessary now, we went 4 years ago) that explains why your formula milk is allowed to be taken in and out of the country (cows milk sometimes not allowed)

Dont worry about taking huge amounts of nappies etc. As long as where you are going has a semi-decent supermarket you'll be able to get plenty of baby items there.

You might like to pack in a fitted cot sheet if you have room. Just in case the little one is ill one night of a nappy leaks or somehting, you might not be able to get clean bedlinen at 3.30am!
Not that your little one is going to be ill or anything of course . I remember being quite nervous the first time we took DS away and it was all for nothing. tenerife has such a huge English population, you'll be able tog et anything you need I'm sure.
Have fun!!

Took DS to Cyprus last August when he was just 6mnths. S/C in a villa - villa provided buggy, travel cot, highchair and the car seat came with hire car - this all saved a huge amount of effort. Things I'd take again: cot sheets, lightweight sleeping bag. Beach towels (these double as changing mat / play area), few small toys. Enough nappies for the week + wipes, suncream (factor 50+). No need to take food if weaning as they can live on yummy fresh fruit and veg - mango and melon a big hit! Sterilising tablets were great (night feed was formula - b/f is major boon when travelling)- I just bought a cheap bowl from supermarket. Supermarkets have anything else you might need. Don't take: lots of clothes - Took x 2 outfits per day - didn't wear anything but his nappy and suncream and stayed in the shade! Was the first time we self-catered and would do it again

To cut down on the amount of clothes needed buy a sunsuit -DS lived in his in France last summer. You can wash them out and they dry in no time.
Baby monitors and the correct adapter plugs are great to give you a bit of time in the sun on the terrace whilst baby is asleep.
Have a great time

We're off to Gran Canaria at 5.00 tomorrow with five-month-old. HV told me to use Evian abroad for bottles - apparently a lower sodium content than other mineral waters. Boil it if the bottle's been open for more than two hours. We found a tiny travel kettle that will just do enough for two feeds. Tommee Tippee are now doing through-away sterile bottles that you can use as and when. Great for the day you actually travel as you don't have to cart around dirty old bottles or worry about keeping milk cold. If you do want to sterilise anything, Mothercare sell plastic bags with the steriliser tablet in - you just add the water and hang the bag somewhere for half an hour. Spare change of clothes for the flight - just in case of leaks! Also useful the Pampers disposable changing mats. Am slightly terrified at prospect of travelling with LO but think we'll be OK. Have fun in Tenerife...
