Has anyone been on a longhaul trip/bit of a 'different' holiday with children and regretted it? I've got this urge.....

We've always done very 'safe' holidays especially since having children.

By 'safe' I mean the likes of France, Canaries, Portugal etc where we can get by with the languages we know, where English is also widely spoken, where I can always find something Veggie to eat, where there's not a shortage of hot water/comfortable beds and all the basics that you become accustomed to etc. On the other hand we don't tend to do hotels, all-inclusive or stay in very English touristy areas if we can help it.

Anyway, I've got this urge to be a bit more adventurous.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about taking the family trekking through the Amazonian rain forests but going somewhere that isn't mainstream Europe and is a bit different. Trouble is I have no idea where.

Can anyone recommend anywhere? Or has anyone done this and loved it (or regretted it)? What are the pitfalls?

Have I got a rose-tinted view of things but will find the reality is whinging children, me and DP arguing ??

We've done Japan & China with our kids (plus USA & Jordan when we just had DD) and they loved the experience.

Closer to home we've been to Morocco, Finland and Denmark plus a lot of Europe.

This Easter we're off to Cuba.

Kids are very adaptable to their surroundings and i can honestly say there hasn't been a single holiday that they haven't thoroughly enjoyed.

If you want something a bit more adventurous, why not try booking a holiday with one of the family adventure holiday companies first. Exodus, Explore, The Adventure Company & Families Worldwide all do family adventure trips and the kids would have others to play with too.

Thanks Iseenodust, looks grat.

I agree that Cuba is another doable place with children. I also agree that children can make excellent travel companions.

Wow, you've all given me lots of inspiration and ideas. Thank you.

South Africa or Thailand. Amazing courtier, beautiful scenery and the latter is amazingly kid friendly. Really varied options available in each country too.

South Africa is near the top of my list once DS is a couple of years older. Also Brazil, China, Thailand and Cuba. They are all places that DH and I have visited and would love to take DS.

I have been with ds to morocco, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. All were amazing. I was super careful about what we ate and drank and he had an amazing time without illness. We first went to morocco when ds was two and everybody made such a fuss of him. Our most recent trip was Vietnam and he was 14 and has learnt so much about the political history.if you're an adventurer at heart then I really would say go for it.
