We are bringing our kids to london for a couple of days at half term and would love to have a proper "tea" scones cakes etc somewhere posh but not the real ritz. THe kids are 9 and 5 and beautifully behaved where will welcome us with open arms. I do want one of those 3 tier cake stand things if possible!

fortnums and masons? floor 4 (i think).
mmmmm

we've never been with our dd (at 2.5 she may be a bit too unpredictable ) but when we've been we've ssn people with children the kind of ages you;ve mentioned.

it's a lovely treat we've done it twice and plan to do it Valentines day!

Tea Dances at the Waldorf are lovely - but maybe not with children

bluesky · 25/01/2006 13:20

Check dress codes before you go, posh teas usually mean no jeans or trainers.

Claridges teas are fab

Also the kids LOVE the fact that when you go to the loo they run the water for you and pass you a towel

robinpud · 26/01/2006 21:23

The claridges web site looks very posh.. £28.50 for afternoon tea whiich I guess is par for the course. any other ideas please?

I think at that price I would pack a posh picnic basket and have champagne (shloer for the kids) and strawberries and cream in hyde park or somewhere nice.

I'm a sucker for the Savoy, but it's also expensive.

CountessDracula · 27/01/2006 09:55

last time I had tea at the Savoy the sandwiches were stale and curling at the edges

robinpud · 27/01/2006 21:08

It's February so will be freezing cold. any more reasonable options?

I know a MARVELLOUS place called Greys in Ludlow in Shropshire which does the full monty with tiered cakestands, waitresses in full garb, 15th century architecture and is highly child-friendly...

But a bit out of your way...

peachygirl · 27/01/2006 21:22

You could try Fortnums and Masons I've been to afternoon tea there. It was very nice.
I think it could be quite child friendly and the shop is quite interesting, lots of mirrors / interesting light fittings etc. They have a website But I think you would have to book

pootlepod · 27/01/2006 21:23

Can't recall where we went- did it once pre kids and have to say it was expensive and fab.

We couldn't finish it all and although it was just sandwiches and cakes, felt so stuffed and didn't have anything later on that night.

Also had a glass of champagne too -£12!!!! Was the best champagne I have ever tasted. Very special event which I shall probably never do again- so yes, go for it.

OK so a picnic in February could be a bit chilly .
