Majorca or Menorca - looking for the best resort

I am exhausted looking for our holiday this year but I'm hoping one of these two will be the key to success.

We are looking for a family holiday with myself, dh, dd 12 and ds 6 and our requirements are:-

Resort where the beach and hotel are all within walking distance, accomodation where the kids are not sleeping in our room, hotel on or very very near the beach. (I seem to remember some towns having beachfront promenades but I can't find which ones?)

Close by to things to do such as maybe a waterpark, boat trip, other nice day trips (I see some places have caves which sound good)

We'd like to be in a busy resort but not too tacky, not night club central and loutish Brits but something with some nice restaurants and child friendly bars.

Any ideas?

East coast Majorca. S'illiot, Sa Coma, Calla Millor up to Calla Bona lovely promenade, bars etc all along.
You can hire, bikes and go the whole length.
Very few night clubs and they are hidden underground.
Hotels various distances from beaches. Google earth is your friend.

Aparta hotels put kids in the lounge and give you a separate room.

Puerto Pollensa or Cala D'Or in Mallorca

Hi start,
Thanks for the info - does the promenade go all along the beacfront of those towns? I like the idea of a nice bike ride along the sea front Grin

Cala D'Or in Majorca.

There isn't a promenade there as the beaches are coves. There is a gorgeous marina though. It's not far to the Caves of Drach.

You can go down the sea front from cala Bona to the far end of cala millor. Then you have to go inland a bit because there's a rocky headland and then there are paths and promenades by the sea again along the beach at Sa coma and the bay at S'illiot.
DH and I did the whole trip Pre DDs on a great heavy bicycle made for two, which was hard work.
The big bikes for 4 are great fun, calla miller - calla Bona works best, nice wide promenade without traffic or curbs.

Puerto Pollensa has a wide beach front promenade which is perfect for walking/cycling along.

As sodapops mentioned, Cala D'Or doesn't have a promenade as such but does have a beautiful marina you could cycle around.

try Pollentia Club in Puerto Pollensa - you can get studios where there is a separate bedroom although the nearest beach isn't that great.

Or, Punta Prima resort in Menorca- same sort of set up, close to a lovely beach and a very nice resort.

Punta Prima is very nice - I've been here twice:

would really recommend it - it's a great place. However, it is not busy.

sweetheart · 07/02/2012 12:15

I should metion that cycling isn't the main requirement - I only mentioned it because Startail said you could hire bikes and I thought it sounded like a nice idea!

The beach is important - want to be able to relax while the kids play and swim.

We love Menorca. Villa near to Mahon for us as we like it, but the kids also like Calla Galdana, more of a resort with great beach, good hotels on beach etc. Menorca is one of the most family friendly places we've ever been and it's so small you can drive from one end of the island to the other in 30 mins

Older I stay in a villa near Mahon too (Son Vitamina - I love it) ! Grin You can get boat trips from Mahon or Ciutadella OP. Both towns are gorgeous.

Cala Galdana, Son Bou, Punta Prima all sound like they would suit you OP. Great beaches, hotels near the beach and options to explore the Island (hire a car and you will see so much more). Fairly busy, good restaurants, but not tacky.

Cala'n Bosch has a waterpark, Cala'n Porter has caves and both are fairly busy but can be a bit English. Cala Morrell (north of Ciutadella) has loads of ancient burial caves and is great for snorkelling - it's an amazing almost lunar landscape, but not really a resort.

The Insotel Punta Prima comes highly recommended by my SIL and her family, and when we visited them for the day there once, it was amazing. Not my cup of tea, but loads of activities, great pools, nicely laid out and quite upmarket for an AI.
