Hotel 'baby listening'?

Does anyone know if this is still offered by hotels, and what are peoples thoughts on it? The hotel I used to work at when I was a student (many many years ago now) did, and it involved leaving the phone off the hook in the bedroom whilst parents were in the hotel restaurant/bar and the receptionist/switchboard operator listened for any noise coming from the room and alerted the parents. DH and I going away for few days for anniversary and taking DD (13months) with us, would love to have a posh meal without buggy and sleeping baby next to us.....

We stayed in Sands in cornwall when dd1 was smaller, we used the baby listening service which as another poster said a completely dedicated member of staff listening in to a wall of monitors. it worked for us at one point dd woke and the other receptionist came and got us without any trauma.

There are risks associated with everything.

It obviously depends on the size of the hotel, the security, the facility they offer and how each parent feels about it... we were happy at Sands due to it being small, all doors locked except the one at reception so no one comes in or out any other way, great staff who are on the ball and come to get you as soon as there is any noise etc. All families have different things that they believe in/are happy with and bring their children up in their own way, I would be happy to leave my children at this hotel with their facility but maybe not another...

And if the baby does wake and cries for 15 mins or so, what harm is actually done?! We are talking relaxed parents vs a possible delay in hearing child yowl. Goodness me, I've done it loads of times; yes there could be a fire, but I suspect rooms have alarms for that; yes lightning could strike, but we cant plan for that. Once, it seemed when we got back that maybe DS had been crying a while. I felt awful at the time. But, do you know what, he is now 5 and Im fairly sure he doesnt remember!!
