hot at what time of year, Rickman? For summer, I'ld say Nice or Spain.

now? the Canaries I expect
or North AFrica (Tunisia/Egypt/Morocco)
Dubia is nice this time of year

Majorca - 2 hour flight.

waterfalls · 20/01/2006 21:42

The first time I went on a plane I was shocked how quick the time went, 2 housr seemed like half hour.

Portugal is just over 2 hours away and is very hot in august. Flying with small children is ok, just try to book them their own seat so you don't have a restless toddler on your lap for the flight duration. Perhaps a portable dvd player with their favourite cartoon on will leave them occupied ??

Does it have to be seaside? Halfway (+) down France is usually pretty warm in the summer - you can fly to Bordeaux or Bergerac or Poitiers in about an hour.

moondog · 20/01/2006 22:52

Go rickman! You need a change of scene.
Flying with kids is not too bad-you'll manage and they'll love it!!

Scroll down the list of destinations here and see if anything grabs you.

We had a brilliant hot holiday in Sweden 3 years ago but the weather was unusual!

moondog · 20/01/2006 22:59

Sweden costs a packet though doesn't it??
And isn't a beer about a tenner???

Yikes!!

JanH · 20/01/2006 23:02

Ah - good point, moondog! (We went in the car and took our booze with us )

mummytosteven · 20/01/2006 23:02

janh - we went to Sweden last summer and it was really hot - 30 degrees. Mind you Sweden in summer probably wouldn't be great with young kids, as they have several hours more light, so I'm imagining the kids might not sleep as well. It's not actually that dear in Sweden Moondog - I was pleasantly surprised. If you don't mind relatively low alcohol beer/cider then a can to take out isn't much dearer than here. The one place I've been in Europe that was hideously dear was Switzerland - £13 for a 20 minutes train trip!!!

moondog · 20/01/2006 23:03

My parents did that in Norway too!
Car could hardly move......

The light wouldn't be so bad in August though, mts. (Anyway we had a holiday in Argyllshire in June once and could still see across the loch at midnight, it's not that different )

We did like Sweden, I must say... we went to Öland and it was like the Med. (Fab "English" translations on that page!)

Probably not v practical for rickman though.

moondog · 20/01/2006 23:11

Intersting what you say rickman,as technically you have done the bravest thing of all (ie leaving your dp/dh when pg).

I know what you mean. Travelling a lot as we do,I feel vulnerable, and have had many dos with dh over lugging carseats halfway around the world for the sake of a 20 minute transfer.
Ijust weigh it up and decide that we can't eliminate every risk, and in trying to do so,we are actually making our life rather dull.

Hey,you don't have to go abroad! Britain is the best place in the world with tonnes to do and see.Stay if it makes you feel happier.

rickman, don't be so hard on yourself - not a lot of people would gaily swan off abroad on holiday on their own with 4 kids, actually! (I know I wouldn't!)

Nice cottage on Öland here - like having your holidays at IKEA . Not sure how you would get there though - you can fly with Ryanair from Stansted to Vasteras but car hire is expensive and I've no idea how far it is - OTOH driving over there is a pleasure, empty roads and courteous drivers.

im terrified about flying too rickman, i know what you mean. i feel daft when i hear about my aunt flying all over the world, sometimes just away for the weekend, like its nothing. (which i guess is true for them). last time (many years ago) i was practically clawing at my seat blubbing like a baby while my then three year old was saying "aw dont worry mummy, its ok..look its fun!".
