We'd like to go to Spain again but are now constricted to august. We've been twice in June to around Costa del sol and Costa tropical but I'm not sure we can manage hotter than that although last time it was around 35 on some days and we survived. Any recommendations?

The Canaries.
Never gets too hot or humid as you are in the Atlantic.

tiggersreturn · 22/01/2012 14:47

Thanks never really considered there

Hum, not sure I agree. In august, you'll get these temperature at night if you're lucky. Day temperature in tenerife in august is more like 30-35. Sometimes more. We go there every year, so I know
Maybe maybe up in he north, Puerto de la Cruz.
Even if Canaries are cooler than Andalucia, it is still very hot.

What about Northern Spain, there are nice beaches along the coast near Santander or there is also the Picos de Europa, great for walking and amazing scenery.

Any recommendations on resorts? We like small towns with easy beach access and not loads of other tourists

We stayed in an apartment in Noja (near Santander) a couple of years ago and the beaches were FABULOUS. It was busy-ish, but nothing like the south of Spain. Very family friendly. We made our booking through Brittany Ferries (ferry and apartment) and we are also going with them this summer to France. They are offering discounts on holidays at the moment (I think you need to book by the end of the month), it's worth having a look at their website.

check out the Basque Country.

belgo · 25/01/2012 15:11

Agree - the basque region - San Sebastian is very nice.

tiggersreturn · 25/01/2012 18:12

Great ideas all of you. I was also thinking of Costa Brava/Catalan parts. How do you think that would compare with the south? Is ETA still active in the Basque region?

Catalan is usually a lot hotter. We drove from Barcelona to the Basque region in july a couple of years ago, and there was nearly 10degrees difference in termperature.

Francagoestohollywood · 25/01/2012 18:19

The Basque Country is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been and I always recommend to visit it, but it can be very wet, and you might risk that it is too cold, ime!

Right near the French border, in the Basque country, it is beautiful, gorgeous sandy coves with high cliffs and green woodland scenery. We camped near Saint Jean de Luz one summer and it was stunning.

Thanks for all the advice. Rain v heatstroke..... a difficult decision. It does sound lovely.

ETA is still active but nothing like the 1990s, and the odds of terrorism affecting your holiday are probably higher in London than they are in the Basque Country. Spain has so many economic issues at the mo I think they're battening down the hatches. I wouldn't count it as a worry.

The only thing I would warn you about is that if you leave your car in a remote carpark, make sure there is NOTHING in it. Car crime is rife in northern Spain if you have a car with hire plates.

Re weather - maybe split the difference and head to Galicia?! Very beautiful, very unspoiled.

Francagoestohollywood · 26/01/2012 12:34

I wouldn't worry about ETA attacks, I'd worry more that I could find the same weather I just left in the UK, iyswim.

Having said that, I think the Basque country is one of the most beautiful part of Europe, the food is great, the coast is amazing, the Guggenheim in Bilbao a must see, and San Sebastian is just perfect.

SparkyTGD · 26/01/2012 12:41

If you go Costa Brava but quite far north, so the coast nearer Girona than Barcelona it will be quieter & more likely to find place thats not so touristy.
