Will I have to buy seats on planes for dts

I know under 2s go free as they have to sit on your lap. My dts will be 2.6 yrs when we go to lanzorote in may, but they were 7 weeks prem and still tiny for their age, so will not be able to sit in a seat anyway. Do they allow them to sit on your lap after the age of 2 so you dont have to pay for the extra seats.

Not been abroad with the kids before, so have no idea.

I dont know if it makes a difference, but we want flights only as we will be staying with my parents who live in Lanzorote.

No, they automatically count as 2 - size doesn't matter. You could always check with an assortment of airlines though

beachyhead · 18/01/2006 13:59

No, they will make you pay. It goes purely on age, I'm afraid.....

mummytosteven · 18/01/2006 14:00

I think they are very strict about making you pay for 2 and overs, so even if they do sit on your laps, i imagine they will make you pay for seats.

waterfalls · 18/01/2006 14:00

Damn will they be cheaper than adults?

I think when we went to Tenerife DS was half price and he was 2.7 at the time.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2006 14:02

They aren't necessarily cheaper, especially with a cheapy airline. And even when they are cheaper, it's not always as much as you'd think!

Hulababy · 18/01/2006 14:02

Im afraid that, as they are over 2, they will have to their own seats and you will have to pay for them. I am pretty sure that they will be expected to sit in their own seats for landing/take off with their own belts on too, along with any other time the seat belt sign comes on. Because of this, you could consider taking a suitable car seat for them to sit in.

Hulababy · 18/01/2006 14:02

Our experience of the cheaper airlines is that children pay the same as adults.

Mum2OneAndBump · 18/01/2006 14:04

When we went to Majorca in September We had to pay for Ds as he was 3, i don't think many places are cheaper as after all you are paying for the seat, we had to pay the same price for ds as we did for ourselves.

Mum2OneAndBump · 18/01/2006 14:05

We went with First Choice as my sister works for them !

LIZS · 18/01/2006 14:05

They'll be charged a child fare (or full fare if a budget airline) and allocated seats. You have to give dob when you book and they'll check passports so you can't get away with suggesting they are younger. Don't understand why you think they can't sit in their seats though ?

waterfalls · 18/01/2006 14:06

Thanks guys, my mum thinks I should wait untill a few weeks before we go, and get cancellations, or cheap flights that they sell just to fill up the plane, but there is 5 of us, so that would be a bit risky dont you think??

LIZS

Because they are very small still, not much bigger than your average 12month old.

Low cost airlines get more expensive the closer to departure you get and think getting 5 seats on the same flight may be risky too. If demand isn't high they may consolidate the charter flights and cancel a flight altogether so there could be less seats available.

LIZS · 18/01/2006 14:11

dd is tiny and it makes no difference on a plane - all done by age.

janinlondon · 18/01/2006 14:23

Sorry to go off on a tangent here - can anyone help? What airlines don't charge infants please????

LIZS · 18/01/2006 14:56

Most have a nominal charge for under 2's ime.

janinlondon · 18/01/2006 15:44

Oh. Thanks Lizs. Thought I had missed a trick there!

Kelly1978 · 18/01/2006 16:21

i paid £40 each for infants last year. And it is def cheaper to book in advance with buget airlines. i saved loads by booking early this year.

Kelly1978 · 18/01/2006 16:22

oh and I think I paid abt 2/3rds of the adult seats for ds and dd.

eefs · 18/01/2006 16:27

it's an insurance/aviation law issue - the airline HAVE to issue a seat for everyone over 2, regardless of size.
