This is our first foreign holiday with two small children - 4 yr old and 20 month old. We've booked a junior suite... Can anyone tell me if this has a separate room for the kids to sleep in? Photos on trip advisor look like it may just be a glass partition? Any other tips?? We're going in a fortnight and I've just started to worry about it!

We had a Suite, which had a seperate room, which could be made up as a living room or bedroom, so we had 2 singles in it for the children. Their website says that "most" Junior Suites have a separate lounge area....I don't think you're going to be able to guarantee it tbh. Could you email them and ask?

Thanks! I think I will... I was just expecting them to fob me off with official speak and knew I'd get a straighter answer from mumsnet! Did you enjoy your holiday?

we had a fab time! DS turned 4 when we were there and they worked it out from his passport, and a plate of cakes just appeared in the room that day! Lovely pools, good food as buffets go, and DD loved the kids club - she went about 3 times for about 1.5 hours a time, and it was never very busy so she had lots of attention!

Hi there.
I live in Tenerife and run a small childcare business so know many hotels well.

I have worked in Roca Nivaria twice now and both families had suites where there was one bedroom and a large lounge/dining area which was used as the second bedroom too.
The two suites that i saw were a very good size.

The area you will be in (playa paraiso) is rather nice too with lovely walks along the sea front and some bars, restaurants and a large supermarket close by.

If there is anything else you would like to know or ask, if you could email me at [email protected] that would be better as i am not quite sure when i will get around to popping on here again.

many thanks.

Hi
Thanks for the replies . I have now booked Arenas Del Mar in El Medano -despite some awful trip advisor reviews ! Now need to research best markets ( not too far away) for shopping-mad daughters and bad weather activities - just in case !! Also I 'd really like to see some dolphins if anyone has any suggestions .
Thanks again !

Ooh, enjoy!
I'm starting packing lists and have some (probably) daft questions, never having done the foreign-hotel-holiday-with-small-children thing before... Do I need to pack enough underwear /t-shirts for each of us for every day we're away?? And can anyone advise on how many toys/ books to pack or have any good suggestions of small things that might keep active 20 month ds and 4 yr old dd quiet and minimise fighting??

wally I think most shops in El Medano will be surf shops, but you can get the bus to Las americas for more serious shopping.
El Medano is very very windy and very famous for windsurf. There is a beach behind the Red Mountain, but the wind is soooooo strong, the sand hurts like thousands of needles.

We stayed in the Roca Nivaria in a junior suite with DS1 and DS2 - the lounge area was the boys' bedroom and was lovely. We had teh best most relaxing holiday there - barely left the hotel!

Definitely take spare clothes for kids (the laundry service is v expensive) and travel wash.

Hi,
We're thinking about going to Tenerife in August with our son who will be 1 by then. I'm just a bit worried it will be too hot! I've read that Tenerife is the cooler of the islands - is that right? Can anyone recommend any of the areas in particular?!
Thanks :-)

gordonpym · 29/01/2012 14:03

Well the North (puerto de la cruz) is cooler than the South (las Americas, Costa Adeje), but it is not so nice. Be sure the hotel has a garden with plenty of shade, and you'll be able to enjoy your holiday. You can go at the beach in the morning and after 5. With a baby boy, good beaches are Playa del Duque (Costa Adeje) or Playa de las vistas (Las americas). Los Cristianos is - in my humble opinion - dirty because of the port , and for the same reason I would avoid Puerto Colon as well. Some here will recommend Playa Fañabe, but I think it is a pity to go to Tenerife and end up, in a row of very crap restaurants, fun bars, noise and dark sand. There are no hotel in the beachfront. Yes the Anthelia is quite close to the lower end of playa fañabé, but this part is dirty and quite depressing with all the closed-down shops and abandoned restaurants.

No problem at all.

And if you want dolphins ... head to aqualand waterpark as they have a dolphin show every day at 3pm which is so amazing then you can have your photos taken with the beautiful, loveable dolphins after the show :)

Just have to share, now we're back, that this was the most relaxing holiday ever, and that I loved the roca nivaria. Would recommend it if you have small children and particularly if you can go out of school holidays. Our last few days overlapped with half term and it was definitely more relaxing before all the bigger kids turned up. But even then, I was impressed with the kids club, the soft play in the family section of the restaurant and the mini disco. The staff were good with the kids, who loved the kids club so much that ds (21 months) kept making a run for it every time we went to the lift and dd (4) was pleading to have a nap in the afternoon so she could stay up late for the mini disco. Result!

Hi wailey we were in Medano back in May and the town was lovely. I'm assuming your shopping mad daughters are teens? They might enjoy the fit surfers in Medano! It was pretty windy but if you have a sheltered terrace you'll be fine. We liked the town beach there too - very clean with good selection of cafes and a nice atmosphere.

There is a town just up the hill from El Medano... can't remember what it's called but it seemed very local and Spanish and the shops were interesting looking.
