Have your puschairs survived air travel?

I was planning to take mine with me as I will be travelling alone with my 4 month old and I think it will be very handy at the airport. However, I have just been to the shop where we bought it and they told me not to take it unless absolutely necessary as, in their experience, they all end up broken?

Has anybody had this and, if they damage it, would you get compensation or do you need to have booked insurance?

well, when we flew i got a cheapo mothercare stroller to take just in case. it didn't get broken though, it was fine

i prob wouldn't risk it with an expensive pushchair though, as even if you do get compensation for it the hassle just isn't worth it

Grumpla · 17/01/2012 13:06

I took mine to the steps of the plane itself and it was loaded on last, unloaded first so didn't go through baggage handling or conveyor belts and so it was absolutely fine.

Check with your airline - if you have to check it in with your cases then my advice would be to take something you don't mind getting broken!

jasminerice · 17/01/2012 13:07

I took ours to australia and back. It was fine.

Asturimama · 17/01/2012 13:15

I can take it to the plane door, but at the other end it will come out of the luggage belts, so not quite sure what to do...

We flew with Thomson and they were great and gave us it back at the plane steps, have flown with others and they've been battered going on conveyor belts, I wouldn't take an expensive one just in case but wouldn't go without they're handy for putting bags on even of toddler is walking and for if they get tired.

I've taken mine with Sleazyjet a couple of times - it always comes to the strange shaped luggage counter at the other end, not down the luggage chute. No damage at all

Taken a mcclaren on number of long haul trips but in a bag and was fine. Friend was less lucky with her phil and teds. I think bag/less delicate pushchair helps but tbh the sling was more useful (we gave up taking pushchair for a lot of
Trips).

ENormasSnob · 17/01/2012 17:21

Out of about 30 flights with a pushchair, I have only had one broken and that was last year. A buckle was snapped on my bjcmicro.

rathlin · 17/01/2012 17:41

My icandy apple and maclaren pushchairs have survived easyjet flights! Was worried about the icandy because of the cost but it was fine. It's so heavy that it would probably be hard to damage. Also if you take your pram to the gate, it will be one of the last things to go on so less chance of having tonnes of luggage on top of it.

OhFraktiousTree · 17/01/2012 18:00

My BJCM has always been fine.

lizandlulu · 17/01/2012 21:10

i think it depends on what kind you have, i personally wouldnt want to risk a really good pushchair but strollers are usually fine, i have been abroad loads of time and only ever seen one broken pushchair come off the belt

is what you already have sturdy? it would be more the problem of not having a pushchair to use more than the cost, for me

jenrendo · 17/01/2012 21:12

I took my Bugaboo to Canada and it was fine, even though it comes apart in 2 pieces. I was worried that they would lose one of them but they didn't. When I got off the plane they had airport strollers which you could put your baby in until you got your own back. I am flying back to the UK in April and will take it again. Fingers crossed!

jenrendo · 17/01/2012 21:14

Oh and mine wasn't on the luggage belt, it was standing amongst all the unusually shaped luggage :)

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/01/2012 21:16

We've taken our Loola and a Maclaren before with a variety of airlines and they've always been fine but we have always put them in a buggy bag which must help.

Pishtushette · 17/01/2012 21:21

Ours broke when we flew with BA. They were very helpful but unfortunately we had to buy a new one and then get a refund from them but we haven't been able to afford it so now we just use the stroller.

sarahjb · 17/01/2012 21:31

I took my bugaboo to Spain last year and its never been the same since. Really not sure what easyjet did to it but brake doesn't work properly and right wheel makes a terrible noise. Need to get it fixed but so expensive to do so and there's the hassle of being without it. If you can take something else I wouldn't risk it!

CrispLeCrisp · 17/01/2012 21:33

My McClaren has been on about 8 flights and survived fine (no bag)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 18/01/2012 06:59

My cheapo Mothercare one went to Aus and back twice and numerous trips around the gulf of Arabia. No problems to report.

Asturimama · 18/01/2012 08:29

Thanks a lot everyone. I think I will leave it at home and take him in his babybjorn as I don't want to risk them breaking it and I can borrow a cheaper one at the other end from my sister, so probably not worth the risk...
