Grateful for a recommendation for somewhere to stay in Delhi - we will will be travelling with the dc, and have to catch an early morning train to Agra so somewhere which is easy to get to the main train station would be good.

Medium budget - max £100 a night.

Thanks

I have always stayed in Karol Bagh recently. The Swati hotels are good, there are two, Swati and Swati Deluxe. Clean and modern, rooms will be a lot less than £100. Go for top of the range rooms as the regular rooms are quite small. They have a website. It is very convenient for metro which is handy to get to New Delhi station. Easy by rickshaw or taxi too. Avoid Paharganj with children although it is right next to station. Are you are going from New Delhi station?

thanks for that infin. Yes, I believe the Agra train leaves from New Delhi station, but it goes at 6.15 am so we don't want to be too far away!

As you will need to be there so early, you might want to consider the Ginger Hotel
www.gingerhotels.com/Delhi-EastDelhi/Hotel_profile.aspx
It is a budget hotel but new and clean and I have heard good things about it although I haven't stayed there. I think they do family rooms. It's behind New Delhi station, you would be able to walk there in minutes.
Hope you have a great time in India.

Ah...that's the wrong link...not the one near the station..ignore! I'll try to find the right one.

infin · 15/01/2012 16:14

This is the right one!

Thanks for that - bit worried about the area around the station, have heard its a bit dodgy...?

It's not the nicest of areas. It's a backpacker area called Paharganj...grubby and with a lot of touts. They are easily avoided, by a firm no thanks and walk away. It's a poorish area so there will be plenty of beggars around but to be honest you'll find even more outside hotels like the Imperial and around Connaught Circus (an area I dislike intensely!)
The Ginger hotel is not actually in Paharganj but adjacent to the station on the other side (Ajmeri gate exit from station NOT the Paharganj exit)
If you are staying in Delhi more than a night I wouldn't recommend staying near the station but for one night just to crash before catching the train it may be a reasonable option.
There are lots of nice leafy areas to stay in Delhi but almost all are quite a distance from the station. Karol Bagh is pretty close and whilst hardly 'leafy' attracts middle class Indians for the range of shopping. It's bustling but feels very safe.
Do ask if there's anything esle you want to know.

Don't stay in Paharganj FFS! I travel in India frequently for work and it's a fle pit I wouldn't inflict on my worst enemy.

Any decent hotel will book you a car and driver to take you to the train station. With children I'd definitely recommend the Lutyens Bungalow (otherwise known as Nath Bungalow) near Lodi Gardens. Nice area of central South Delhi. Otherwise the Oberoi Maidens jut north of he old city is close ish to the station and very nice.

Flea pit.

I agree, as i said in my first post, don't stay in Paharganj. The Ginger isn't in Paharganj (and would only be suitable as a crash pad for a night before the train)
I was thinking of budget as I imagine both the Oberoi and Lutyens would be significantly more than £100 a night for a family.

DonInKillerHeels · 15/01/2012 18:56

Nope. Both ballpark of £100 last time I stayed. And for one night in a place as bloody expensive as Delhi I'd push the boat out.

GeorgeEliot · 15/01/2012 19:42

Thank you both, we are actually spending 3 nights in Delhi (2 at the beginning of our trip and one at the end) so will take on board the advice about not staying near the station.
