How to get to Legoland Denmark for less than a million quid?

Hippymum89 · 09/01/2012 23:02

We live in Yorkshire, my Mum is Danish, so we thought we'd recreate childhood holidays to Legoland in Denmark (check out the website - brill!) with my dd who is 6.
Anyway, in the olden days (the 80's) we used to sail from Newcastle to Esbjerg, easy peasy.
Now the only ferries go from Harwich and cost a FORTUNE!
Willing to pay up to 1000 pounds for the 3 of us, surely must be do-able?!
Anyone got any ideas? We want to take the car.

We went to Denmark a couple of years ago and i think we flew Leeds to Copenhagen with KLM (via Amsterdam) because the price of the ferry was so much for the 4 of us. Then we hired a car and drove up to Legoland.

If you want to take your own car how about taking the Hull to Rotterdam ferry and driving from there?

Or Ryanair fly direct to Billund but only from Stanstead. Then you could hire a car when you get there to see a bit more of Denmark. If you are doing this i can highly recommend this to save on the cost of hiring a car seat as well.

Legoland BTW is FAB! So much better than Windsor.

Get on the mailing list for special offers on the ferries. We managed to get a deal when they were doing a "car goes free offer" so it only cost just over 300 pounds. Unfortunately you still have to drive to Harwich.

You don't need car hire - the airport is literally a 5 min taxi ride away. We flew Ryanair to Bilund last Oct half term. We stayed a short walk away at [http://www.lalandia.dk/uk/Pages/forside.aspx Lalandia] which was fab. DC (4 & 8) loved it. Definitely recommend because there were no queues for the rides! Tip - book the accommodation & tickets through Legoland holidays to get the best/cheapest deal.

Try linking properly this time!

have never been to Windsor, but we went to Billund with DSs aged 9 & 14 & had an unbelievably amazing day - they both loved it, despite older one being a bit too old really - we were extremely impressed

This was August, when Denmark was back to school, so really quiet; def a better time to go than June (unless you want to do things with Danish family?)

(it was 10 years ago as part of a trip to Sweden from Newcastle, when DFDS was affordable Sad)

Could you get a ferry to Zeebrugge & drive up to Denmark from there? If not, Dunkirk?

Ponders · 14/01/2012 23:18

I just had a look at Stena line, you can do Harwich to Hook of Holland in August for around £85 each way, is that any good? (day crossing, car + 2 adults & 1 child)

Ponders · 14/01/2012 23:22

Hull-Rotterdam overnight inc compulsory cabin is £440 return so you'd save £270 by driving down to Harwich

Bargain!

tyler80 · 15/01/2012 08:44

Rotterdam to Billund is further than Yorkshire to harwich so you're not saving anything driving time wise

Ponders · 15/01/2012 13:16

saving money-wise though, surely? Hook of Holland is Rotterdam, effectively, so setting out from the same point to Billund whether getting the expensive Hull crossing or the cheaper Harwich one.

Harwich-Esbjerg, midweek sailing with cheapest (3-berth) cabin is £528 return, Thu 9th - Tue 14th August. (Why don't they do reclining aircraft-type seats like Brittany Ferries I wonder? The ferry itself is only £200, the rest is cabin) That would give you 5 days (4 nights) in Denmark.

Rotterdam to Billund is around 500 miles each way, which is do-able in a day, just; but you'd need to overnight in Rotterdam first, & then there's the fuel on top, so maybe not that much cheaper in the long run...& quite a bit more stressful with a 6-yr-old in the car

EldonAve · 15/01/2012 17:58

Depends on your dates but you can get Harwich - Esbjerg cheaper

Also if you buy a YHA card - about £20 - you can get 10% off - same applies if you have the ISIC student card

hocuspontas · 15/01/2012 18:16

Return fares from Stansted to Billund are around £300 if I'm reading it correctly. Obviously you will need to get from Yorkshire to Stansted but if you don't need transport the other end (being so close to the airport), it seems like a cheap way to get there.

Ponders · 15/01/2012 18:19

I would cheerfully pay quite a lot more not to have to fly with Ryanair Wink

tyler80 · 15/01/2012 21:35

Cimber air fly Newcastle to billund I think.

I love Ryanair as it means I don't have to spend holiday money visiting the in-laws. The most we've ever spent is 50 per return ticket.

tyler80 · 15/01/2012 21:41

Just checked and it doesn't look like they fly that route anymore.

I know ba fly/codeshare Manchester to billund but whenever I've looked into it it's been £1000pp

Ponders · 15/01/2012 21:53

you can fly from Manchester via Amsterdam with KLM for around £150 each.

but might as well take car on ferry for that amount!

Ponders · 15/01/2012 22:09

that is a very good price though, esp compared with same thing from Leeds-Bradford which is £300 each Shock

shortest duration, including change at Amsterdam, is 3h 05

look on \link{http://www.farecompare.com/flights/Manchester-MAN/Billund-BLL/market.html\farecompare.com} if you're interested!

BA fly direct from Manc but at £260+ return each
