Anyone flown Air Asia?

Hi, has anyone flown Air Asia to Singapore or anywhere else longhaul? It's a LOT cheaper than BA but am feeling there has to be a reason for this! Not bothered about luxury per se but don't want 13 uncomfortable hours. Ta.

I've flown them a fair bit, but only short haul really (Bangkok - Chiang Mai, Saigon - Bangkok, etc.) but Aussie friends swear by them from Perth - Singapore, etc. I found them pretty good for a budget airline - more of an Easyjet than an evil Ryanair, if that is a useful comparison?! :) You do have to pay for everything (including luggage), so I'm not sure if I'd want to do 13 hours with them, to be honest, unless price was an over-riding concern. Might be worth pricing it up with meals, luggage, tv, etc, and seeing what the difference really is. I think you have to go via KL with AA, don't you? I would probably be tempted to pay the extra £100 or so, and fly with Singapore Airlines, who are excellent...

However, if it was a choice of flying them or BA, I'd probably be tempted to avoid BA because they are pure evil. Disclaimer is that I actually pay extra not to fly BA, I have had so many problems with them....

Hi thanks for your comments, good point about paying for everything. I also hate BA so actually yes would probably fly Singapore airlines as well! Yes you do go via KL which could be a pain as I think an overnight stop may be involved.

Hi - we flew to Australia with Air Asia and found them absolutely fine. They are a no frills carrier so do be prepared to pay for the extras; blankets, food etc but even factoring all that in it was hugely cheaper (and even cheaper if you pre-book your meals). Big caveat though as my husband, who is really good at tracking down the best price thus making possible holidays that would be beyond our reach, says that the difference between the big boys and the low cost carriers has narrowed - sadly because they are all getting more expensive. Hope it helps.

We flew Air Asia to KL a couple of years ago (pre DS) and they were fine, you just have to buy food/drinks. We pre ordered meals in advance as it was such a long flight, as a veggie I got the same pasta meal for dinner and breakfast, wasn't too impressed with that but then airline food is never great! Lots of people on our flight had brought their own food in tupperware/foil etc.. (not sure how got through security as didn't think you were allowed!). But yes I would fly with them again without hesitation, would just not order the food! Oh and stock up on water once through security-pricey on plane! We bought about 6 biggish bottles to last us! We also flew internal to Langkawi with them and that was fine too. Though obv if there was not such a huge price diff I would choose Air Malaysia but we got the flights for about £300 each so was a no brainer!

We flew with them to KL with 3 kids + baby last year. Better than Ryanair, more akin to easy jet - clean etc- and air stewardesses did try to help with kids on 14 hour flight. Seats fairly cramped - narrow when baby trying to sleep on you/toddler etc. For adults, if they're doing one of their sales, it's a no brainer. With kids, unless we get sale tickets for next Christmas hols, I think we're going to try Eva air to BKK as their economy prices are roughly the same and their seat spacing's bigger, food/baggage's included + they have individual tv screens! Think it depends on price and who's travelling.

Like Jenstar, we used AA a lot when we lived in Bangkok. I didn't realise that they did flights to Aus, I must look into it.
They are what they are. A budget airline, albeit with pretend leather seats.
Love Eva, they are fantastic.

Bloody hell, just looked into it. The prices are hideous, what an eye opener. The last time we flew to Australia from the UK was around 18 years ago. It cost us £500 each IIRC.

Tell me about it, Kreecher.... My OH is from New Zealand, and we go over to there/Australia every 18 months. Our flights to NZ in September (2 x adults, 1 x 3year old) were a total of £4000! We used to do it for about £800 each until about 5 years ago.
Bread and water for dinner, anyone...?
