Disney world Florida

We are thinking of a trip to 'do' Disney world in October half term. We have three dc who will be at the time 8, 7 and 5.
Do you think Disney World will have enough to offer for 5 days/ 6 nights. Youngest is DD who will love the whole princess fairytale stuff but guess older DSs may prefer Epcot and we all love swimming and water parks so planning a day at least doing that. Sure they would all love the animal kingdom.
We think we want to stay at a resort hotel/ villas and like the look of the Beach Club villas.
Any tips greatly appreciated!

Disney is huge and if you were there three weeks you would still find things to do which is why people return again and again. I would plan a park a day and they are nothing like the parks here - they are huge. We have done a 2 week holiday and ten day although we did Universal too. I imagine though when your DS's have had their say on parks that will be your time gone!! My favourite is Animal Kingdom................. Its amazing!!!

It is huge. We have been 4 times, with DD at 2y, 4y, 7y and 9y. We have always done parks pretty much every day, we rarely have a day off. So between the 4 Disney parks, 2 Disney waterparks, 2 Universal parks, Sea World, Space centre - and now they have Legoland too we have still not run out of things to do!

Agree - 2 weeks in Dec not long enough. prepare for some substantial queues if you go in school hols - we went mostly out of school hols then when schools broke up queues went from 10 mins to up to 140mins! can you go the week before or after? we stayed in a fantastic villa on sunset lakes. 10 mins to the door of disney, own pool etc. Much cheaper than a package or disney stay. stay near enough that you can go back for naps during the day so you can do the evening shows. get the disneyland with children book see other threads for details we found it fab. be first at the parks and use the fast pass system. Water parks are brilliant and well worth a day out to if you can. take a really good day rucksack and pack with snacks (cheap cookies from supermarket) and bottles of water. have a fab time - wish we were going back. Private message me for more details.

plenty to do. we've been a few times now, most recently september of last year and was great. the floridian children had gone back to school so only really long queues were in magic kingdom.
the only downside i can think if in october is the rain. when it rains you will get soaked but its still so hot and humid that wearing rain jackets is unbearable.
we got stuck on the splash mountain ride on one of the outside bits and were soaked within 30 seconds. so much so that we got off the ride and walked straight to the shop and brought new t-shirts and shorts for everyone. the children loved that they had disney clothing, us adults not so much.

you'll have a fab time, but be prepared to be exhausted on your return.

I'm also thinking of going to Florida for two weeks with DD. I want it to be a once in a lifetime trip (splashing out with a bit of inheritance money) and just wondering if any would advise for/against doing a week at Universal and a week at Disneyworld?

mummymeister · 09/01/2012 22:42

We bought 2 week park tickets for both universal and disney so we could come and go as we pleased rather than one one week and the other the next. the difference in price between one or two weeks on each pass is minimal really for the flexibility it gives. we found universal to be better for older children 10/11 + and disney for the younger ones. depends on how old your kids are as to what use/value you would get.

KWL51 · 10/01/2012 11:31

yes universal better for older children.
the best parks that we all loved were busch gardens and seaworld. lots to do for everyone. busch gardens has a few big roller coasters such as cheatah hunt but lots of animals for the little ones to look at as well as sesame treet world and we spent two days there. seaworld tickets we brought could be used at seaworld, busch gardens and aquatica, a water park.
seaworld was awseome, my favourite by far, i even went on manta the new rollercoaster where you are lying flat face down and i am not a roller coaster fan.
for us the best parts of disney were the other parks as far less crowded, epcot, test track is brilliant. Animal kingdom was great as well and so was hollywood studios, that has a really good show at the end of the night with mickey and friends on boats and lots of firworks etc, but get there early.

i may be in the minority but i say avoid discovery cove. People go there to swim with dolphins and you get literally a 30 second swim. you do get a long talk beforehand and when in the water in your group of people, i think it was either 6 or 8 people in total in each group, you get to stroke and feed the dolphin, but the actual swim is insanley short. and no freeplay etc. the site is lovely and its free drinks and food all day long, but its not worth the fortune you pay to go. also that was the only day i got burnt, using the suncream they provide.

2 weeks in florida would be the holiday of a lifetime and would be fab to go all out. i thought that would be the case the first time we went and easily spent £15k on travel, accomadation, tickets and food. it does kind of tar other holidays though as florida has so much to do, especially in orlando. i recommend staying off site as well. when you stay in a disney or universal hotel you end uip spending all your time there especially as thier free transport is geared towards taking you to thier parks and nowhere else.

whereas most hotels on international drive have free transfers for universal parks and seaworld parks (even transfer to busch gardens was free and thats over an hour away) but disney transfers not included unless says so specifically. there are plenty of taxis and dont be afraid to get in one of the licensed mini buses that will tout you while stood at the itrolley or bus stops or you can catch a bus. the times we went without a hire car and stayed on international drive i felt we saw a lot more of orlando than when we hired a car.

for shopping the outlet malls either end of international drive are ok, but dont expect nice clean shops, lots of bargains, but a few of the shops are just shops and not outlet ones. the best mall was florida mall and there were bargains there as prices cheaper than the uk. Florida mall had your normal high street type shops whereas milennia mall is the designer mall with tiffany, gucci, etc and not child friendly.

noexcuses · 12/01/2012 11:56

great balls I'm sure you can make it the holiday of a lifetime but it does not have to be as expensive as some say. We stayed for 2 weeks, in a villa with pool and did all the parks bar Seaworld for less than £3k incl. flights (family of 3).

Agree with others universal only good for kids over 10/11...unless your DD really into Harry Potter or Dr Seuss!

MOSagain · 12/01/2012 17:57

LOL, we've been nearly every year for the past 15 years and still not done it all.

The last time we went DD was 4 and DS nearly 2 and they loved Universal (Barney and little rides) and Islands of Adventure, particularly Dr Seuss. DD still sings the damm blue fish/red fish song from one of the rides!

I'd highly recommend a villa, you can get a 4 bed with private pool and gamesroom from 400 GBP per week, much cheaper than a couple of rooms in a cheap/tacky motel. Have a look at Loyalty Homes www.loyaltyusa.com a company owned by an english lady who lives out there now. She only manages luxury homes within 4 miles of Disney

Hulababy · 12/01/2012 18:01

My DD loves Universal. Shes's 9y now but has been younger too.

The Curious George water play area if fantastic fun for children.
ET is very sweet
Spiderman is great fun, and the 7y and 8y will def be able to get on.

There are some very big rides there too, but there is plenty for children as well. Not as much as Disney granted. And it means you have the City Walk which has some good places to eat and has a great atmosphere int he evenings. And Bubba Gump is fab!

And HP is simply amazing!
