Am I crazy? 10-hour flight with 8 month old. 7 hour time difference. One week.

I've done a successful transatlantic flight but that was 5-6 hours. By the time baby gets used to local time it'll likely be time to go home yes? Please help me decide if I'm a nutter! Thanks in advance.

DH and I took DS1 on honeymoon with us when he was 6 months old - we drove to glasgow (3 hours), flew from there to london, stayed overnight, flew from London to Detroit where we changed planes and flew on to Orlando - you're not crazy - it can be done - DS1 was great the whole time and adjusted to the time difference with very little problem - we were also there for 1 week. Our flights between London and Orlando took about 12 hours. You can do it.

I did do this once, well longer flight actually as went from uk to Hawaii.
Flight was fine as bizarelly got bumped to first class from business (why the airport staff thought they would inflict our baby on innocent first class passengers is beyond me!) so had loads of room.
Worst bit was time difference, she would wake up about 4am every morning, convinced it was daytime and no way would she go back to sleep, a souless hotel room is pretty boring at that time of the morning!
did start improving just as we were leaving (after 5 days) but of course was screwed up once back home.
Not impossible though and didnt stop us having a good time so go for it!

Should be fine. Are you bf? Just carry baby around with you when you're out & about so that they can be abit more active than sleeping in their pushchair.

Thanks all for this. You've given me confidence. We'll likely be in business class which is G R E A T! And I've just this weekend finished breast feeding so I'll need to be organized enough for loads of bottle feeds (very hungry baby!). Thanks again.

We went to san francisco with dd (with change in NYC) when she was 10 months old. It was a hundred times easier than the flight to Denmark about 10 months later. Go now while you can! We've just finally thinking she might be ready again soon (she's now 4).

WestCountryLass · 15/01/2006 21:53

Nah, you're not crazy, go, it will be worth it

You're brave. I'm American and haven't taken my kids Stateside. Ever. Mainly b/c of the return. I'd have to go back to work w/two jetlagged kids. No, thanks.

Luckily, my family is able to travel here quite often.

I went to a wedding in Las Vegas for one week when DS1 was 11 months - flight was not a problem but he did wake up in the middle of the night wide awake. We took it in turns taking the baby out to the hotel general sitting area for a crawl around while the other parent slept. By the time we left he had adjusted to the new time zone! But I still do it again.
