spending money question

Sorry, not very exciting, but we don't travel abroad very often and I'm struggling.

I need to start saving spending money for a holiday later in the year and need a figure to aim for, we're cruising Norway for 7 nights, but are actually only in port for four days, on those four days breakfast and evening meal will be on the ship.

So we'll need spending money for 2 adults for 4 days, for lunches, coffees and a few souvenirs, and a present for dd (another story DH booked this as a surprise).

I understand (first time cruisers) that we will be able to get more currency on board ship using DHs debit card if we need to but I'd prefer to take enough cash if possible, and save that option for emergencies.

Any thoughts?

Also, I was thinking of buying Krone as I save, so it can't be used for something else iyswim, is that a good idea?

Are there any implications for charges?

I would keep savings in sterling and just do one currency conversion. I usually use travelex. Bear in mind if you go on excursions organised by your cruise company lunch is often included and the cost of the trip simply goes on your onboard account along with tips, drinks etc. You can use your credit card for souvenir shopping.

Thanks, I'll look at Travelex.

TBH I'd like to save in advance and reserve the credit card only for emergencies or if i see something I really want need.

DH is paying for the cruise itself and will use his debit card for drinks and tips on board.

I've said I'll provide the spending money for when we're ashore - it's a joint big birthday present so this is my contribution.

Look at www.cruisecritic.com for further advice and information re cruising and tipping. Tipping is something else that will need your consideration, it can be a set amount each day.

One the cruise my parents were on, no money was taken until the end of the cruise until the pax were presented with their bills by the purser for payment at the cashiers office. Alcoholic drinks can really bump up the cost to be paid at the end of the cruise.

You need to be clear on what is and is not included on your cruise package.

I'm sure I've read in the brochure that tea and coffee is complimentary during the day, which will be great, plus all food including cabin service. Alcohol and everything else is extra.

TBH with all that food on offer I'll be keeping the alcohol to a minimum or they'll be rolling me down the gang plank when we get home.
