Brittany vs Italy Keycamp holiday - help!

weareallgoingonasummerholiday · 06/01/2012 19:08

Going away at some point this summer with DH, DS (2) and grandparents.

Dates are flexible and we like Park Albatros in Tuscany and La Pointe St.Gilles Brittany. Important it is toddler friendly (pool/play area) and near a beach.

Anyone got any tips on either site or any other recommendations for toddler/active grandparent holidays?

Am going slightly mad trying to decide where to go -please help.
Thanks!

Bump. I was talking about Keycamp yesterday.

Where are you thinking of going SucksToBeMe?

We went to PSG in 2010 and absolutely loved it. Our DCs a bit older than toddlers, but there is a lovely toddler pool and a play area. The beach right outside the camp was pretty but not great for paddling as it is rocky and covered at high tide, but the main town beach is v nice and about 10 mins walk. There are also several very nice smaller beaches within a 15 min drive.

Benodet is a lovely town with lots of v nice, but quite pricey, restaurants. The pizzeria on the camp is a bit dire, so it's self cater or eat out.

We will def go back, but this year returned to the Grand Metairie. Hasn't got a beach you can walk to, but onsite pony trekking, goats and geese and a decent enough restaurant that you can eat on site a bit at least.

Silvella at Lake Garda or Airotel Pyrénées at Luz St Sauveur. But the more i research the more laces i love! AGGGHHH!!!!

SucksToBeMe · 06/01/2012 19:32

Places! Though laces are good too Grin

Thank you Partystress - very helpful. Was it hot enough to swim in the pool when you went?

It is true SucksToBeme - the more you look the more it gets confusing and I end up spending 2 hours searching sites and getting no closer to an answer!!

Pools are slightly heated, so yes. The great thing about Benodet PSG is the covered pool is part of the same 'complex' as the outdoor ones so if you have a DC like one of mine who is a bit wimpish about any water that isn't actually warm, you can still swim but be outdoors IYSWIM.

Depends what you like. With a toddler they probably don't need as many if the organised activities and kids clubs. We have friends wo went to Albatross and found it a bit big, soulless and noisy- but those with teenagers might like it because of that. We have been to Pianacce (not that far from Albatross) 3 times and it is lovely. Not too big, walking distance from medieval Italusn hilltop town etc. Eurocamp covers it. Have also been to Garda twice and can highly recommend Camping Eden and Fornella. Again, not too massive. Eden is within walking distance of a small port with restaurants and a v easy cycle to Salo (which is stunning, and much less crowded and touristy than any of the other lakeside towns we visited.)

Great info, thank you - I had heard Albatross was big and noisy and I don't want that but Brittany is colder than Itay and I want a hot holiday! Will check out your other Italy suggestions.......

We've gone to Britanny the past two years (and will be spending part of this years holiday in Britanny).
We went to L'Atlantique near Beg Meil (not far from Benodet, which is a lovely town I agree). We stayed with Keycamp, our children are older than yours so we are bound by school holidays. We actually spent an age in September trying to get school holiday availability at Italian sites. Nada. None that we liked gave us what we loved about L'Atlantique: a walk to the beach through a nature reserve, quiet and good pools where you don't wear swimhats (Sicily), not too busy but lots to do and men can wear swim shorts.
If you are able to go outside of school holidays I'd prob say Italy, only because I am desperate to go and couldn't.

notyummy · 06/01/2012 21:00

Ah yes. Swim hats.... Eden insist on them, but neither of the other two did.

Such great holidays.
My parents came out for a week when we were at Camping Pianacce and they also loved it. Weather was amazing in Srptember. Think we had a thunder storm one evening and that was it. Site restaurant is also fabulous and was ate there a lot.

Bump....would love to look into some of these recommendations.

weareallgoingonasummerholiday · 07/01/2012 19:00

Right thanks for your help, looks like La Pointe St.Gilles in Brittany is where we are spending 2 weeks this summer. Hope for sunshine and the big plus is I can pack the car with loads of crap important stuff and get the ferry over..... Smile

We went to Park Albatros last year. It is huge and very busy. The pools are great for little ones though and there is lots of entertainment going on. We did enjoy it. The beach is a long walk and isn't that special though. Have a look at Portofelice or Union Lido on the Italian riviera before you book. We spent a week at UL when dd was 3.5. It was fabulous and there is an enormous sandy beach and lots of places to eat/drink.

Portofino · 07/01/2012 19:14

Sorry when dd was 2.5.

makemineapinot · 11/01/2012 18:01

yes another vote for Portofelice here as it's FAB!!! Perfect as it ahs toddler friendly pools, play areas etc and is a short walk from a gently shelving sandy 9v clean) beacha nd a short walk into Eraclea Mare which ahs lovely shops, restauarants (Pirate restauarnt is lovely and has an indoor climing area at the back for young kids) we therefore sat out the front Grin but it is fantastic and we'll go back one day! You fy to Venice and can get a bus to just beside the campsite! A lovely water park is in the other direction 9again by bus) in caorle whoch is a lovely town to visit too.
have camped in both Italy and Brittany and have to say, after Italy we haven't gone back to Brittany - can't guarantee the weather in Brittany although it is lovely too!

IHeartKingThistle · 20/08/2012 23:55

Are you back OP? We're going next week and would love to know how you got on!

Teamthrills · 21/08/2012 14:55

This is a bit late for this yr, but We've just returned from La Grande Metairie, Carnac & have had the best holiday. We enjoyed L'atlantique last yr, but La Grande Metairie was simply fab. Dcs ages 1, 5 & 8 adored the spotless swimming pools, horse riding on site, farm animals, huge zip wire & adventure climbing facilities, play area, trampilines, table tennis and a gorgeous bar area with terrace. Short drive to beach. We went with keycamp & they were ok. We'd definitely return here.
