We are going in 4 weeks to the Yucatan. We are travelling round a bit, though not as much as we would like as we have 3 DCs including a five year old.

Any tips?

Stealth - altogether probably about 8 months. That was until I felt normal, not tired out, no redness in my eyes (I got really nasty bloodshot eyes after most of my other symptoms had passed). It was the strangest illness though, just feeling non-specifically bleurgh. Hope he feels better soon. I have had no long term problems since though. Other than a strong aversion to Mosquitos Wink

thanks, Philmassive. DH seems to be at a point where he is largely Ok but if he overdoes it then the temperature spikes and the shivers reappear Sad

Only 2 weeks to go now - beyond excited.

Thanks to this thread we will be visiting a couple of Cenotes, in particular the Dzitnup one:

How did it go?

We got married there and was amazing so very much would recommend Coba and the cenotes.

I'd be interested in an update as we've just booked to go to Dreams Tulum for 3 weeks on Feb 6th next year :)

Very interested in Mayan ruins, mexican culture, watersports and marine life so should be a magical holiday. As long as none of us get Dengue fever....

Poulay · 12/06/2012 17:41

I didn't like Dreams Tulum one bit. Full of Americans, the entertainer started his schtick with 'Is anyone here from Wisconsin?', people getting drunk in the pool and being stupid, swimming with dollar bills in their pockets to tip with (supposedly AI), it felt very corporate, processions of wedding parties, and they wanted us to tell them where we were going when we left the premises. WTF?

Riu resorts much better.

CrownPrincessOhDearNigel · 13/06/2012 01:21

They won't get anything out of us - because we never know where we're going when we leave in the mornings on holiday ! Although I suppose from a safety point of view if you've gone missing at least they know where to start looking ?

We looked at Riu but we need somewhere that has a kids club from 3 and Dreams was one of the only ones. We don't mind Americans or weddings and are pretty chilled on holiday so I reckon we'll be OK.

Did you go out much ? We do like to go out and about so will probably head off for snorkelling to akumal as i've heard it's good and we will definitely be wandering round the mayan ruins at tulum.

Oh yes we went out every day, the rooms were nice but the resort just felt a bit Stepford Wives.

We went swimming in various cenotes. Also the cave place, Aktun Chen.

We went to I think Yal-Ku lagoon for snorkelling, it was fantastic, just the most beautiful blue, and calm, like a swimming pool but natural with rocks and lots of fish. I think there was an admission fee but it wasn't a plastic theme park like Xel Ha or Xcaret. We also went to a beach a few miles away where there were turtles everywhere, you just swam out 10 feet or so and there they were. Half Moon Bay possibly? Not sure.

We went to Cozumel one day, that wasn't that exciting. Holbox island was nice, went swimming with the whale sharks there. We stayed in a rather 1970s hotel directly adjacent to Chichen Itza, which was a novelty.

Playa del Carmen is pretty tacky.

I resented the Americans because I didn't want to tip, but the staff were so expectant of it that you wouldn't get served properly if you didn't have a $1 bill in your hand. When we stayed at the Riu it was mostly British and the occasional pound coin was offered but few and far betweemn really.
