Long haul flight tips for adults!

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 03/01/2012 15:09

Unsurprisingly there are lots of tips for taking kids on long haul flights :o which have actually been rather useful - baby wipes, some new apps for my phone to play on, a book/puzzle book!
However are there any nuggets of advice for an adult facing a 9 hour flight? Useful things to have in your hand luggage? I suspect I will be as over excited as a child is!!!!

Eye drops. The air is really dry on a plane and my eyes get red and sore. There is one at boots which comes in individual doses which is great cos it lasts for loads of flights then. For the same reason I decant a little bit of face moisturiser into a small pot, and take water (they never bring enough). Ear plugs and eye mask are my top tip for getting sleep. What airline? If BA economy have a nice snack in the airport or take one on, the food is rubbish and never enough .

Vaseline or lip balm and a large bottle of water.

I never have the concentration to read as much as it seems the perfect opportunity. I tend to catch up on the films I have missed.

I second the lip balm and buy water once through security, like a litre bottle size. Maybe download podcasts to listen to? Take paracetamols - I always get a headache!

Pashmina/wrap thing for chilly moments or to wad up as a pillow, music/iPad/ipod with films/books etc on, magazines, slipper socks, hairbrush/face cream/lipbalm, toothbrush/paste. Bon voyage!

Don't drink alcohol, it dehydrates you and makes jet lag worse.
Wear v comfy shoes - your feet will swell.
Wear loose clothes in natural fibres, and with layers. Planes can be v hot or cold, as can airports.
Pack a spare top in your hand baggage if travelling with kids, they will spill stuff on you.
Don't pack loads and loads of hand baggage it just gives you extra stuff to manage round the airport and on and off the plane.
Pack a few nutritious snacks, like cereal bars.

9 hours is not so bad - the cabin crew will regulate you with meals / drinks / lighting etc so it will... um... fly by!

But, wear layers - it can get too hot / cold. I wear a vest top under a long sleeve t-shirt and good quality leggings that wont go baggy. On landing, remove long sleeve t-shirt and you're ready for the heat! But I often pack a spare top in case of crumpling / spills. It's also the only occasion I wear a waterfall cardi - you can wrap it round yourself like an extra blanket. I also take a pashmina - it can be turned into a pillow / blanket / towel (if some idiot spills a drink on you!). Thick socks too. Take shoes off. I wear Ugg Boots and put flip flops in my hand luggage to change into.

Take your make up off after take off - I use wipes - then moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! I put together a (clear, plastic!) bag of mini toothpaste & brush, wipes, deodorant, moisturiser, eye drops, lip balm and strong mints. Some of this you'll have to buy airside due to sizing etc. I also take a hairband in case my fringe is doing my head in. No to bulldog clips - you can't lean back in them!

YY to ear plugs and eye mask too. And a blow up neck pillow (I care not what I look like on a long haul!).

Ipod with relaxation audio books can lull you to sleep too. Books, magazines, big bottle of water and you're good to go!

I've done a lot of long haul and this is practically my checklist!

Happy flight!

I like a bag of pick and mix sweets - for some reason rooting round in my bag fills in a lot of boredom.
Its the only time panty liners have a place in your life too - combined with a femfresh wipe you feel an awful lot fresher on arrival.

I second the eye drops suggestion. My eyes always get sore and gritty after a long flight. There is a little spray that you can buy - Actimist, which is brilliant. It is small enough to buy before you travel as the amount of liquid is below 100ml. You will still need to carry it through security in a clear plastic bag.

Some fab ideas in there... thankyou all!
My other half thinks I am obsessed with lists - he's right! My list for the plane is now:
baby wipes, eye drops, lip balm and moisturiser
phone with new games, puzzle book, magazine
fluffy scarf, eyemask, ear plugs and slipper socks
cereal bars, pick&mix!
dress in lots of layers and get a big bottle of water after security

Umm you can't turn your phone on whilst in flight!

andiem · 16/01/2012 17:59

Turn left when you get on the plane that is my top tip

We travel to Australia often and I always wear flight socks to prevent dvt. Also circle your ankles and flex your feet frequently throughout the flight. You can also take two aspirin before you fly. All these help prevent dvt.

On a journey that length I always take a clean top and clean underwear to change on the changeover. Also toothbrush and toothpaste. Anything that can make you feel fresh.
