St Ives Bay

We have around £400 to spend on a holiday in Cornwall in August.

Judging by previous comments, St Ives Bay seems a good choice, only we can't really afford one of those "A" standard chalets. They have a C4 for £400, I'm just concerned that it might be absolute cr*p if we stay in one of those. I can cope with low spec, but if its tatty or uncomfortable....

Someone PLEASE help! Alternatively if someone has another suggestion in/around St Ives for £400 for w/c 19 August, then it would be appreciated! (and yes, it has to be that week!)

I have been to St ives Bay & we loved it, not sure where we stayed i will go and check out the website, we stayed in a big caravan right by the beach with a sea view, it was gorgeous and comfy had everything in it, I saw some of the chalets but they seemed to be at the entrance when you went in, i suppose its a choice you will have to make?

I will go & check out the websitr & let you know brb

We stayed in the Bayview Caravan but thats a bit out of your price range, does it have to be august & how many of you are there?

MaryBS · 11/01/2006 19:08

There are 4 of us (2 adults 2 children). It has to be that week as we are in Devon the following week then back to school.

There is the Mermaid caravan for about the same money, but I guess the same question about quality applies to that too....

The reason we were going for the chalet over the caravan as it has a bath....

Not sure about the Mermaid, we were going for the mermaid & then we decided we wanted the sea view if i remember rightly the mermaid does not have a sea view. The site is fab & very clean, i know waht you mean about the bath as we were toying with that issue only because of ds but the shower was fine, I think the caravan would probably be nicer than the chalet, just basic but to be honest its literally a shell anyway theres so much else to do.

MaryBS · 11/01/2006 20:34

A sea view would be nice, but we've got the sea view to end all sea views in the apartment we've got in Devon (Woolacombe) the following week.

Thanks for your advice.... if you've got anything else to add, or anyone else can chip in, I'd be grateful. I hate making holiday decisions!

Ooo - a question about the entertainment, whats it like, what time does it start, and is it smoke free?

We stayed last year just down the road from St Ives in Hayle, at Gwithian Sands Chalet Park. We stayed in one of these chalets
www.chycor.co.uk/cottages/hayle-littlebluehouse/index.htm

  • it was gorgeous inside and out and we are going back this year. In Sept it was £250 for a week but think it is £400-450 a week in August. The whole area is so so so beautiful, especially Gwithian beach!

All of the chalets are of a good standard - the whole site accomodation is regularly maintained and updated - the C4's are fine - just not as new as the A6's which we usually book. You can check out the inside of a c4 on their website if you haven't already done so, we go every year and love it there!

I finally got to check out the interiors from work (sneakily). I have a problem with running Java on my home PC (although thats a whole different story! Suffice it to say, reinstalling doesn't fix it!).

I think we WILL book up at St Ives bay, the other places look good, but the swimmimg pool swings it for us, I think!
Whats the entertainment like at St Ives Bay? And is it in smoke free areas?

MaryBS, we had a lovely holiday at St Ives Bay. It is worth it for the beach alone. We did lots of swimming in the sea.

However, the entertainment was, imho, lacking... rather more Jethro than Eddie Izzard but I am I'd rather a party on the beach than a club house person so I am probably not the person to comment

MaryBS · 17/01/2006 20:02

My FIL is a big Jethro fan....

Well, I've done it, we've booked up to stay in a Mermaid. Thank you everyone for your advice

I love St Ives, it's my favourite place in the world. Night life is centred around the harbour and is very family friendly. If you want to eat out make sure you book a restaurant otherwise you'll be hungry.

MaryBS · 17/01/2006 20:38

Can you recommend any restaurants then please? I hate being hungry!

Hi - we love St Ives and have been there for the last two years though not in August. There is a great travel company based there which rent out all kinds of accommodation in the area at varying prices:

www.aspects-holidays.co.uk/html/about_us.html

Might be worth giving them a call for a brochure or seeing what they recommend.

Another website/company who might be able to suggest something are:

www.helpfulholidays.com/

though I found Aspects to be cheaper.

Hope this helps
