Grand central station is quite cool too and I love the Chrysler building. We did the red double decker tours and I thought they were very good value for money. They are jump on and off so get you around the place. I think we paid $22 each for the uptown and downtown tours and a night tour that went over the brige and into a speakeasy. Incredibly touristy but we only had a few days and so no time to explore on our own. Manhatten is so small too you can walk everywhere. I LOVED it and would go back in a shot. We went about this time four years ago for our 1st wedding anniversary. It was FREEZING but we had all our cold weather stuff and still sat on the top deck. I felt like I was in a film the whole time. There was so much I recognised. Brooklyn bridge worth seeing too. Have a great time.

Sorry noooo time to read the whole thread - burning the gravy

BUT word of advice .... book all the attractions ahead .... then you don't hav to queue - bit like the "fast-track" in Disney

HTH

Skyler, did you pre book your bus tour? we cant find any that cheap

fimac1 · 08/01/2006 15:53

Shop in Daffys - 'clothing bargains for millionaires' for locations

www.daffys.com/

Walk over Brooklyn bridge and brunch in Brooklyn Heights cafe - stroll down to the waterfront for great views of Manhattan skyline - lots of info on previous posts on Manhattan/New York if you do a search.

Our best night out ever was Brandys Piano bar on the Upper East side - and we lived there for three years. A close second was either drinks or cocktails in the Met or Guggenheim on a Friday evening - with free live music, followed by a Malaysian meal in Penang (Upper East side) Try and book one of the Booths

ellis island is a must see

Skribble · 08/01/2006 19:35

True about the heli tours you might have a wait, and don't book ahead if it looks at all like it may be rainy/dull or foggy as its not so good, clouds are OK as you aren't that high .

We did prebook the bus tour through Virgin who we arranged the package with. It may have been £22 in fact but I remember thinking at the time that it was DEFINATELY the best value thing we did there (that we had to pay for) and we went to a show on broadway, did the helicopter tour (stroppy miserable staff and weren't allowed to take our camera - post 9/11) and a boat tour too. (Very touristy ). HTH.

Oh no Century 21 really is worht a visit. I got my fave ever coat there (a calvin klein one that cost a fortune here) for about £60! Brilliant for ties, suits, CK boxers etc

Skribble · 09/01/2006 22:33

Surprised about the camera not being allowed mind you i was there 10 yrs ago, couldn't tell you the company. Suppose it might be a security thing???

Skyler · 10/01/2006 17:36

The camera thing was supposedly a security thing even though they had an xray machine and you could conveniently buy a disposable camera at an extortionate price to take on board. I bought some cheapish binoculars to take on from the shop in the waiting room and was not allowed to take them on the flight!!!! WTF!! They wouldn't give me my money back either so that did sour things a little. It is prob a bit more relaxed now though as this was the Jan after 9/11 and security was tight. The statue of liberty was still shut too.

Thanks for starting this thread badpussmice. I am going on the 23rd of this month.
Can anyone tell me about American clothes sizes.
I am usually about size 14-16. But am currently pregnant so want be able to try stuff on but dont want to miss out on fantastic bargains. What size would I be in the US?

cori · 13/01/2006 16:49

Quick bump

fimac1 · 13/01/2006 19:14

A size 8 is a UK 12 so it would be 12? Sizes vary widely there though so you would be best to try everything on
