Where to go in Denmark?

Watching The Killing has led to us toying with the idea of renting a cottage in Denmark next summer. However, I know very little about Denmark and am a bit overwhelmed with the amount of online information, so have no idea which are the best regions to visit.

We would be travelling with an approx. 18mo - hopefully the beaches and going on bike rides would be enough to occupy him, depending on the weather. We would probably take the car over from Harwich so perhaps the west of Denmark would be a better bet. (I'm nervous of driving abroad, but I imagine the Danes to be quite civilised drivers).

We went to Denmark for our summer holiday this year and stayed in a chalet near the beach. The weather is not much better than the UK so you would be unlikely to stay on the beach for the whole time. We spent time in Silkeborg and the lake district which was pretty and went on day trips to Ribe and legoland which was a highlight of our trip.

Food was disappointing expensive and lots of pork and dairy - but we live in Spain so are used to a totally different diet. Its a nice civilised place to go on holiday with kids, everybody speaks english etc but dont expect to spend your time swinging from the chandeliers.

we had a hol in Sweden with a side trip to Denmark several years ago & Legoland was an amazing highlight of the whole holiday - have never been to the Windsor one but from what I've heard there's no comparison!

what time of year would you go? Because their school hols are much earlier than ours, so when we went to Legoland (mid-August iirc) it was incredibly quiet - which was fab.

Copenhagen is lovely too.

(The country as a whole is a bit flat & dull though I'm afraid)

with a pre-schooler you could go in June then, which would be busier but probably more fun.

Also in Sweden they have various midummer/solstice festivals with bonfires & what not, Denmark might be the same, worth looking into

Great minds dogindisguise! I sat googling holiday rentals in Copenhagen last night with the very same thought. Found some lovely ones. V keen to repeat the Scandic experience having had a fab city break to Stockholm a couple of years ago. I was thinking June - all advice gratefully received.

Thanks for all the replies. Fanty, I'll look up Silkeborg on a map. I'm wondering now whether it would be better to go next summer (though preferably avoiding Danish school holidays) when DS will be 2.5 and might enjoy Legoland a bit more.

We spent a few holidays in Scandinavia as kids, but one of my favourite places was Aarhus. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aarhus) We camped, and I couldn't tell you exactly where, but there was a lot to do and see in Aarhus - museums, cultural things, outdoor activities, etc.
Your little one may well be too young for a lot of these things, but one of the highlights of our trips were always a visit to a Sommerland park - goscandinavia.about.com/od/summeractivities/tp/sommerlands.htm Loved them!!
Also, if you're sailing into/out of Esbjerg, you have to go to Legoland at Billund. Enjoyed as much by adults as by children! :)
