Woolacombe is lovely. DP used to live in Ilfracombe so we take the kids down there every year - we even took them to the caravan park last year when ds was only about 3 months old - still had a fab time!!

Woolacombe beach is really lovely and great for the kids, I think Ilfracombe is the nearest 'town'.

If you are driving there's a place called Lee which only the locals really know about which is fantastic.... you have to walk out through loads of huge rocks/rock pools (brill for the kids!) then you get to a little beach.

I think Jayzmummy and surfermum go surfing at woolacombe so they n=might know some more....

thanks folks; jayzmummy has give me some helpful info on ruda which does sound like its in a great location. still undecided as woolacombe bay seems to have bit more for adults. did read a couple of reviews a while back saying that a couple of the parcs were great for older children, ie school age plus, but there was nothing suitable for little ones. can't remember which parcs these were though

Woolacombe bay has an inexpensive creche with trained staff on the Golden Coast holiday park. Also on Golden Coast is a decent pub with play area.

I used to go to Ilfracombe on holiday every year when I was little and spent a lot of time at Woolacombe (lovely beach but a little overcrowded, preferred Barricaine beach which is known locally as 'the shell beach' and is right next to Woolacombe). We also went to Lee Bay (as mentioned by zephyrcat), Hele Bay, Combe Martin and the Tunnels (Victorian beach/bathing area- great!) plus lots of others.

The other absolute must is Watermouth Castle, which I loved. There's something there for adults and children- Gnome World, mini funfair, castle, history, picnic areas etc (the Gnome world bit was the most exciting bit of every holiday!). I am in fact taking DH to Ilfracombe this year on holiday (shh don't tell him, it's a surprise) as he has never been anywhere near Devon.

I've only been to Woolacombe Bay, but once was a lifeguard training weekend and the other a lifeguard convention. I'm afraid I took rather more notice of the bar than the facilities for children! If you stay there, you can access any of the facilities on any of the 3(4?) parks there.

I love Woolacombe though and have been there camping with dsd a couple of times. The beach is great and in addition to the places kleggie has mentioned there's also The Big Sheep.

MaryBS · 07/01/2006 16:08

I LOVE the big sheep! :D

You can use clubcard vouchers for entry too!

Going back to Woolacombe bay(I got interrupted by DH on my last post). I can heartily recommend it for young children. The creche is fantastic and is a wonderful place to leave under 5's to play. They do activity sessions there too. They have entertainment suitable for young ones like clowns and magic shows too. There are indoor/outdoor swimming pools and playgrounds. There's a courtesy bus service to the beach which costs £1 per week unlimited travel. There's a cinema too. I liked Golden Coast the best, mainly because that is where the creche and the pub is. We used to drop the little ones at the creche for a couple of hours, they would give you a pager in case of problems (we went 2 years ago and it cost £2 for 2 hours!), and then wandered down to the pub, where they do fantastic food and decent real ale. Also at the pub there is a sandpit, tarzan swing, climbing stuff and slide.

excellent .. heading out that way in August .. for our First proper family holiday in 6 years ..have rented a cottage about ten min drive from woolacombe

any more tips for places to go (with 5 and 2 year old) very welcome

alibo · 08/01/2006 13:17

sounds like gold coast is better for ds's age than woolaccome bay; thanks for tips! still kinda tempted by ruda being right on the beach. just another question, how do you go on in the caravans if you need a cot?

Golden Coast is one of the Woolacombe bay sites. When we needed a cot, and stayed in a 2 bed caravan, I think one of the beds was removed or folded away so that the cot would fit in.

This thread is about 20 years old now but I am now looking up best place to stay out of woolacombe bay or ruda holiday park.
So hard to decide. Woolacombe looks great because the facilities etc and caravans look way better but.... ruda is so close to the beach.
Would love to hear off anyone that has been to these places recently and can help with my decision 🙏
