I've just found a pile of them in his study. Only about £70 worth but I could use that money. I went to the travel agent today and apparently they are restricted and I can't change them back. Any ideas anyone?

Try your bank and see if you can pay them into your current account, or part-pay your credit card.

Or try google - I put in the search term: "foreign exchange " and "bureau de change ", and the first hit both times is a business I once used to buy a 50-dollar bill that I wanted to send in the post to the US. Once I'd gone through all the identity procedures to prove I wasn't money laundering (!), I got given a crisp 50-dollar bill (obviously I paid for it) which they already had on the premises.

It might be worth you doing the same kinds of google searches, see what comes up, and contact whoever to see if they'll buy your rubles from them. (Maybe check with your local Tradings Standards people to ensure they're legit.)

Thanks huggly I'd never thought of those options. I'll try phoning round and see where I get to.

I did a small google and the suggestions on another forum, on a thread from 2007, were the Post Office or, oddly, Marks and Spencer! May be out of date info though.

Must go and get eyes checked. I thought your thread title said rubies and I was thinking - here we go stealth boasting about only having rubies and not emeralds. Or something.

Thanks OldLady , trouble is they were only restricted a couple of months ago, before that they could be traded normally. If only I'd found them a bit sooner.

No, no rubies here. Although I wouldn't want to vouch for what might be in my husbands cesspit study.

Ah, did wonder if the info might be out of date. How very frustrating for you.

Current Rubles are Belarusian, Russian and Transnistrian. Other Rubles are obsolete.

I would ask your bank, and if they can't help ask advice on the TA Russia forum or Belarus forum.

Thank you. According to the foreign exchange I asked they are current.

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll follow those up.
