Chester Zoo - quite pricey, but accessible by public transport - train and bus.

Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester - near Deansgate Station/Oxford Road train station. Free admission, loads to see and do, there is a children's section with a small soft play type area in the corner.

Formby - beach and red squirrels. Doable by train and walking.

Southport - beach, bowling alley, cinema, shops, pleasure beach (not sure when it's open though!).

Seacombe aquarium - you can get ferry from Pier Head, ferry trip will probably be a treat in itself for the kids. As well as the aquarium, there's a soft play, and a Space museum for kids.

Croxteth Park - got the park, the playground, the hall and the farm (you have to pay for the hall and farm). You can get the 18 bus to it from town.

also check out the museums in the city centre for the 7 year old - they often have weekend workshops etc.

Port Sunlight might also be worth a trip - they have a heritage centre museum, a big art gallery, and there's a soft play centre nearby (change trains at Central, get the Wirral Line to Bebington)

Chester town centre. It's got the wall, the cathedral, and it's nice down by the River as well. There's also a park near the city centre shops (Grosvenor Park)

Chester city centre - got the walls, cathedral, the river side with ducks etc, and it's generally very pretty

Or you could get the train to Blackpool - there's the beach, the Tower, Sea-Life Centre (probably not the bets weather for Blackpool).

The red squirrels should be on the national trust website - the reserve is national trust. It's free to go in, the only charge is for parking.
