Has anyone stayed in a hostel?

I've got a rare night out in London on Friday with some friends Grin.

I live 70 miles away from London and the last train is before midnight. I'm considering booking a night in a hostel in case I miss the last train.

I've found a hostel which looks secure and clean - and costs £21 for a bunk in a four-person female dorm, but having never stayed in one before I don't know what to expect.

What are hostels like to stay in? I'm not expecting Claridge's, but I'd like to be prepared.

I've never stayed in a hostel in london or the uk, but i have been in tons all around the world. I would imagine slightly lumpy matress that has had thousands of people sleeping on it, squeeky bunk beds, nowhere great to put your stuff, and shared shower/toilets. probably very small room.

Hmm - you are going to get what you pay for i am afraid. depends who you are sharing with - could be OK but could be a nightmare. if you are up for it and want to risk it go for it but have spent a couple of nights in places where the other girls arrive back drunk, get a bit out of hand etc. what happens if this happens? If you can step up to a travelodge or similar then at least you have a room to yourself. some of the small hotels are fine. try ringing them directly to get the best rate rather than going on line. found a couple of good bargains this way but aim to spend about 40 - £50. 1 less round of drinks and its paid for.

Thanks for your advice. I have booked a hotel room all to myself! Worth staying sober so that I can enjoy the luxury of a child-free morning. Grin
