Virgin Atlantic 'baby meal' for a nearly 2 yr old, what is it likely to be?

We are flying Virgin Atlantic in the new year and DD1 will be nearly 3 and is down for a child meal, DD2 will be about 21 months and is down for a baby meal.

Any idea what that is likely to be? She just eats normal food with the rest of us usually, within reason, and I'm almost certain that she would refuse a jar of baby food. I tried her with a jar once when I got caught out with nothing for her and she wouldn't touch it and that was when she was still a baby so I doubt there is any chance now.

Does anyone know if I can pay for an upgrade for a child meal for her? Maybe I should just plan to take lots with us, maybe buying things airside in Manchester airport.

I have a friend who works for virgin..I'll message her and ask.

If she eats normal food, I'd go for the kids meal - we flew with Virgin when DS1 was 22 months and he had a kids meal and was fine with it.

McPhee Wow, that would be great thanks!

Dinky How did you get a child meal? Travel agent says that because she is under 2 it is just a baby meal, no choice. The travel agent didn't think we can upgrade to a child meal for her but I was hoping that the collective wisdom of MN would tell me there was a way! When I log on to our booking online I can't change it for her at all, its a drop down box with just baby meal as the choice.

I've left a message for her on fb, she may well be working but soon as I hear I'll post back.

McPhee Thanks for that, you're a star!

Here's her reply.....

Hi ya hon, no worries, it's quite a normal question. If she has ordered a baby meal then she will get jars. You can also order children's meals as well. As the baby will be 21months by then and if they eat anything if it was me I'd just get a normal adults meal. They are normally a veggie pasta, or something like a sausage and mash, beef stew, etc. The kids meals are possibly not the healthiest and have fruit shoots, sweets, etc with them so I'd just get a normal meal. There will be a bread roll with it as well. Hope that helps, she can just change it by going on to the virgin Atlantic website, go to manage my booking and put her booking details in. I would always take extra food with me onboard anyway, just incase! Hope that helps hon, anymore questions just give me a shout! X

It says here that baby meals are for up to 12 months, kids meals after that.

McPhee · 19/11/2011 22:03

If you message me privately with your flight she's going to look at the menu for you.

Chandeleria · 19/11/2011 22:07

McPhee I'll message you now, thanks so much!

No problem at all.

McPhee · 19/11/2011 22:09

She has just said that what you could do is to cancel the baby meal all together, and take an extra adult meal off of the cart as it goes past. No extra cost obviously.

dinkystinky · 19/11/2011 22:11

We actually booked a separate seat for DS1 (as he was nearly 2 and I was pregnant with DS2 so didnt much fancy having him on my lap) - the only meals we had as options for him were childrens meal or adult meal.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 20/11/2011 08:45

TBH I would take some of the childrens own favourite foodstuffs to eat and do not fully rely on the airline to provide for either of them (or you for that matter). Childrens' meals as well are often served not long before the adult meals arrive and they can be very poor in terms of quality (FWIW the adult meals are not always up to scratch either in terms of quality or taste).

BTW Virgin often only do one drinks run on their flights so if you want any more drinks you will need to visit the galley.

Just taking an extra adult meal off the cart may become problematic as the airline works out exactly how many meals are needed in advance for all the pax.

RickGhastley · 20/11/2011 09:00

Deffo pick up some food to take onboard once you have gone "airside" ie through security.

Airline meals are full of salt, generally not tasty and even when you order the meal it is sometimes not loaded. Plus meals are delivered at a set time and your DC may want to eat before or after this time. You may not be able to get an extra ault meal as the airline caters for the number of meals ordered with little if any buffer.

Take it from someone who worked for an airline for many years!

We usually pick up sandwiches, salads, fruit, biscuits and drinks from pret a manger en route.

I either missed it or you didn't mention if your little one had her own seat. If she is travelling as a lap baby, I would definitely take extra food. Nearly every time I travelled with one of my kids as a lap baby, they weren't down for a meal at all! Never mind what I might have filled out at time of booking, on the plane they didn't have any record of food for them. So take a few sandwiches with you!
