If so, any recommendations....where to go/stay/suggestions for self-catering villas too if anyone has any?

It is fab but I preferred St Lucia.

Will try and find where we stayed.

CountessDracula · 04/01/2006 11:32

Yes been a couple of times
Are you taking kids?

matilde · 04/01/2006 11:34

yes forgot to mention that didn't i....two - 6 and 3. Trying to get something booked for Easter and want to go to the Caribbean, Tobago recommended by friends. Why did you prefer St Lucia collision?

I dont know really as they are all very alike. The people were fab and childfriendly and the hotel we were in was sooooo beautiful.

You want SC though so I am not sure where to find out about that.

Tobago is very laid back and relaxing, incredibly lovely and warm and very friendly people. I've stayed in a village called Castara a couple of times. The accommodation is basic but reasonably priced. I stayed in one of the posh hotels one night too and it was also lovely and not too expensive.

matilde · 04/01/2006 11:40

I don't necessarily want self catering - just doing an all-round hunt at the moment and wondered if anyone had any fab recommendations. Anywhere as a starting point would be great - which hotel(s) have you stayed at?

CountessDracula · 04/01/2006 11:42

ooh carmenere where did you stay? We stay at Sea Steps in Castara, it's heaven!

CountessDracula · 04/01/2006 11:46

sadly not suitable for kids of that age though

Blue Haven is nice

matilde · 04/01/2006 11:50

just had a look at the link Countess, looks lovely. Had a look at Castara too (sounds idyllic)....anything else suitable that anyone knows of?

stayed at coco reef which was perfect with children.
also hired a villa called Solitaire but with immobile children only (6 mth old) - pool comes just off the living room so no good for mobile ones. that's a problem with quite a view of the tobago villas. there are some v good villas on a lovely beach with a shared pool called Plantation Villas (I think) = 3 beds, teak floors, airy, v nice - I'd look at those if I were you.

Carmenere · 04/01/2006 12:03

CD - I stayed in Cliff Hanger twice but my brother and his wife stayed in Sea steps, it's gorgeous, much more luxurious than Cliff Hanger!
I loved Castara, we met some really nice people there

CountessDracula · 04/01/2006 12:05

hmm not exactly luxurious but just such paradise, I love having a tiny cove all to ourselves!

We were going to go back this month but dh has pronounced the caribbean "too dull" so we are going to NY instead

They were building a new place on the bigger beach last time I was there will see if I can find

matilde · 04/01/2006 12:18

Thanks CD any help gratefully appreciated.... Caribbean 'dull' indeed - sounds like NY will be fun!

Have you thought about Grenada there are some nice places to stay there

Blue Horizons looks good for families (they do interconnecting suites or rooms} and it's v close to Grand Anse which would be a great beach for kids. Not stayed there, IIRC it is set back a bit behind the small road going past Grand Anse but with great views.

CountessDracula · 04/01/2006 12:20

and you will get cheaper through www.justgrenada.co.uk
than booking direct I suspect, looking at the prices

matilde · 04/01/2006 12:22

we were initially looking at Grenada and only started looking at Tobago when friend suggested instead....will have a look at your recs now...many thanks!

PrincessPeaHead · 04/01/2006 14:33

mind you grenada was completely flattened in winter 2004/5 so I would double check your hotels have been rebuilt/there is a palm tree left standing/the beach hasn't been swept away wherever you wan tto stay. it really suffered badly

yoyo · 04/01/2006 14:39

Honeymooned in Tobago back in '92! We stayed at The Turtle Beach Hotel but I think it has been expanded over the years. We had a lovely time and the children asked to go there only a few days ago. I don't think DD1 could stand the heat as she found Spain too hot last Summer.

Memories of swimming in the Nylon Pool and hiking through the rain forest as well as snorkelling over the reef...

putthatdown · 05/01/2006 19:05

Well you've picked a great island to visit. We have been many many times and enjoy the laid back atmosphere - very untouristy vibe. Anyway, we rented a villa that we found in Rough Guide - it was clean and very well maintained. Things to do - you can drive round the entire island in a day - we loved Englishmans bay. Also beach in Pigeon Point is lovely - though you pay a small fee to use it. Best to check out Rough Guide which is very accurate. Have a lovely time. We are off there in March following a week in Trinidad - were going to the 2006 carnival!

matilde · 05/01/2006 21:38

Sounds fab. Want to go now....want some warm weather already!

We spent a month there with six children in a villa we found on a website ( cant remember it) The house looked grim on the website and turned out to be fabulous. We noticed that most of the holiday villas were well maintained with beautiful gardens. The kids loved the beaches especially Pigeon Point and |Canoe bay but they found driving to the other side of the island to get different beaches tourture as it took hours because the roads are very windy so I would suggest pick a house near these beaches and make sure you have a nice house with a big pool.

have been to the Grand Courlan in Tobago, but Rendezvous in St Lucia was better and The Royal Antiguan in Antigua was by far the best of the three. We are off to Mauritius this August, anyone stayed at the Silver Sands?
