Do you know a cheap way to get from Scotland to Bordeaux?

Dh's friend has moved to France and is getting married there next year at the beginning of September. Dh our dd's and myself are invited, dh is best man and we need to start figuring out how to get there.

Does anybody have any ideas of cheap ways to get there?

I've been looking at flights but there only seems to be 2 airlines that fly to Bordeaux! British Airways and Air France. Are there others that I don't know about?

I'm really looking for the cheapest flights possible, Ba are coming in at £750 for the 4 of us, I can't believe it's so expensive to just hop across the channel, what makes it worse is that we'll only be going for a long weekend as the weekend they get married is only 2 weeks after dd1 goes back to school so we can hardly pull her out for a fortnights holiday.

Driving probably won't be a possiblility as although I may have passed my driving test by then I don't think I'll be confident enough to drive in France.

Does anybody know a nice easy cheapish way to get there?
I would tell Dh to go by himself only I'd really like to go and we've nobody to leave the girls with plus Dd1 is really looking forward to going to France.

Looking forward to your words of wisdom

bmibaby fly from Manchester to Bordeaux, and we got flights in Sept last year for £4-5 each (plus £15-£20 tax) - total for 4 people was about £160 round trip. Could you get to Manc fairly easily?

Moneysavingexpert flightchecker is a great way to find out what there is, but it doesn't go as far ahead as next Sept yet. (Flights in March are £0.04 )

you could tryskyscanner these are very cheap but it will probably entail flying to England or somewhere else first.

Er....is that near Edinburgh?

I haven't lived in Scotland for the past 4 years, honest I haven't, so I can be excused not knowing, can't I.....

Erm....Jan, Yorkiegirl was looking for you earlier, did she find you?

Do you need to be in Bordeaux? Flights to Bergerac are usually cheap, not sure where they come in from but defo stansted and I think southampton or somewhere. About 70kms from Bordeaux, but maybe an option as they are much much cheaper than flying to bordeaux. BMIbaby and Ryannair I think. Have you looked on the map pages of the cheap airline websites to see if there is a tiny airport nearby instead of Bordeaux? Think that as well as Bergerac, there is one called Brive too in the Dordogne.

bmibaby website does go up to next Sept - put your dates in, I found £13.49 and £8.49 fares for the first week of Sept. (Also £43.49, but if you can avoid weekends it's much cheaper.)

They are getting married in Bordeaux and since we're travelling with two kids I'd like to try and make the journey as straightforward and easy as possible, trying to avoid lots of stopovers etc if I can. Although it doesn't look like I'll be able to get direct flights very cheaply.

Most annoying thing is they actually live very close to Geneva and there used to be hardly any flights to Geneva but all of a sudden there are loads of flights to there, but to get married they are going back to Bordeaux where the bride is from. Wonder if I could persueade them to stay in Geneva it would be easier to get there, lol

Miaou, Tayside is a region, it includes Perthshire and Dundee etc. I'm an hour north of Edinburgh and GLasgow

For the sake of £500 or so it would be worth driving to Manc?

Linnet · 27/12/2005 22:27

Would all depend on whether or not I've passed my driving test and whether or not I'd manage the drive to Manchester.

We were really hoping that they would get married during our summer holidays then we could have made it into our main holiday. the way it stands this weekend away to the wedding will be our only holiday next year. once we've added in flights, accommodation, food etc it's going to cost a fortune. No way we can afford a proper holiday as well as the weekend away

bmi fly E'burgh to Manc and some of their flights are only £10 each way - again this was random dates next Sept - website here .

If you can jiggle your dates around to get the cheapest flights for 2 legs both ways it might not be such a huge amount (but taxes will probably be £20-£25 per flight, per person, which does add up).

You may be better off using someone like easy jet to get to Gatwick and the use BA to fly to Bordeaux. Should be much cheaper this way. Think thet Flybe also come into Bordeaux.

Ther are no other airports, Brive and Bergerac are too far away.
