NEW YORK! Help me sort a hotel!

Going will be:

ME
DS (14)
DS (12)
Witch (50 something).

Now, Witch will want at LEAST her own bed or preferably her own room (because otherwise the DS's beat her up and attack her etc) but whenever I do a hotel search, all I keep getting is rooms with 2 double beds meaning either me and witch would have to share (and the two lads share!!) or one lad sleeping with his mum(!!) and one with Witch!

Any ideas much appreciated!

When are you thinking of travelling?.

Do you have a set budget re accommodation cost, what is the max per night you are prepared to pay?. NYC hotel rooms per night can be pretty costly due to high demand and the city's various taxes placed on hoteliers.

If Witch is the sole occupier of a room a supplement is usually payable.

You need to specify two rooms when looking at the website of the hotel in question. For your boys and yourself you may want to have a room which has two double beds and an additional sofabed.

Salisbury House on West 57th is nice and they do a buffet breakfast within the hotel. Another nice hotel I have stayed at is the Doubletree Guest Suites at Times Square.

2 rooms, each with two single beds, so you and witch share, your dcs share the other one, or 1 double for witch, one with a double and a twin.

Doubletree Suites do 2 rooms suites, 1 with sofa bed and 1 with 2 queen beds.

Millennium Briadesy near Times Square is good. Have you thought about an apartment? My sister did that and said it was great. Are you sure a holiday with the "witch" is a good idea??

We always holiday with Witch - only last time she was tortured by the kids pretty badly so wants more space this time.

Budget is pretty limited really, especially as our flights seem to be coming to £3k alone.

How do I find out about apartments?

VRBO is your friend. Just google it, they cover all of the states. We stayed in 3 places in California recently, and would highly recommend

It stands for Vacation Rentals By Owner. So for NYC, you'd input which area you're interested in and number of bedrooms & then choose one. There's an availability checker for each place.

Hi

Not unfortunately surprised to see that the airfare is around the 3K mark; there are now 4 adults travelling (your 12 year old will now pay adult fare as well). Also rising fuel costs and the myriad of airport taxes have contributed to such a rise.

You will also need to factor in the cost of the ESTA application which is currently $14 US (about £9) per person.

How about going on holiday without the Witch?.

Which airlines are you looking at?.

Ok well I've decided to look into renting an apartment for a week (Thanks Mumble) instead of booking a hotel - that way Witch gets her own bedroom and we have that "real NY feel" going . It also seems a bit cheaper.

Regarding flights - would it be better to book them last minute? and is easter a really expensive time to fly? Because I did NY flights leaving next month of SkyScanner and it cost £1k for all of us! That way our entire holiday would only cost £2k.

Attila - I couldn't go to NY and leave Witch, she would be devasted! Grin Plus I don't know how I'd cope in a strange city on my own with 2 teens - probably fine but I would be a bit nervous about it I think!

No, book your flights asap. DH paid £9k for our flights to California by booking in April; by August, a few days before, it would have cost £12k.

9K!!!! I was just looking at Virgin Holidays to Florida and worked out we could have 3 weeks with accommodation and a car for about 3.5k!

I think Witch is not OPs mum or MIL as she's only 50 something, and OP's children's ages would indicate she's probably around 40 herself.

Witch, therefore, by a matter of simple deduction my dear Watson is SIL or A.N. Other.

haha Witch is indeed my EX mil Grin as strange as that sounds - I'm on very good terms with her and we often holiday together although I very rarely see her son (you know, that bloke that fathered the children) lol.

I'm only 30 Mumblechum (was a young mum :) ) so now not only am I not talking to you for getting lots of expensive trips Envy I'm also not talking to you because you made me 10 years older than I am Shock

(The DS's ages were based on what age they will be in a year and a half Wink )

I'd book the flights asap as these routes are very popular.

Be very careful re booking the apartment; there are scammers online who specialise in non existant apartment rentals. Do your researches very carefully.

If you do go to NYC I would fly into Newark airport rather than JFK as JFK is a nasty pit of an airport.

Travelling at Easter as well costs a small fortune these days; again airlines take full advantage of the half term that happens around that time. You also have rising fuel costs and air passenger duty tac that gets factored into the overall flight cost.

I think it's fab that you still like your ex MIL.

Hope you find something and have a fab time in NYC, it's a fantastic place to visit.

sorry just seen its Easter, yes book early. Me and DP are heading that way for Easter too. The NY flights were v.spenny so we are flying to Boston instead, 2 days there, driving through New England & ending up in NY.

Try Radio City Apatmrtments. Close to Time Square. Not, like, really swanky, but good value. Beware of apartment scams.

We are going to Boston on the 28th of March 2012 for a fortnight staying with my brother, but thought we should do something else for a few days in the second week.

Would a trip to NY on the train be possible? Reading this now we must book some where if we're going to go. Me and DH and 6YO and 3YO.
