I planning on whisking my DH away to Iceland for his 40th for 3 (maybe 4) nights in November. We'll want to see as much as possible but also relax abit and we're more into outdoors stuff than cities. On my list is definitely the Northern Lights but i'm open to suggestions and recommendations on anything else.
Anyone been? Hotel/tour recommendations would be great!

I haven't been, but two of my children have been on school trips.

The Blue Lagoon is a must.

i was talking to a friend yesterday who had stayed at the ice hotel which is in Northern Sweden/Lapland. I know its not Iceland but looks fab if you can't find what you want in Iceland. here

I remember Phil and Kirsty on the program Vacation, vacation, vacation covered Iceland and stayed in a great hotel but can't recall the name of it.

We went to Iceland for our honeymoon in March and it was great. Weather is very changeable so at that time of year you'll need to be fully kitted out for winter, blowing wind, hail, etc. We stayed for two nights at the Hotel Ranga which is about two hours outside Rejkyavik and were lucky enough to see the lights on our first night. There isn't much else to do around the hotel itself, it really is just a base to see the lights. I think it is a 4 or 5 star hotel and you can sit outside in the hot tubs and enjoy a glass of wine under the stars (one of my high points of the weekend!). The food was okay but not really worth the price they were charging so pleased that we at least saw the lights while we were there!

We didn't do any hiking but we did drive a couple of hours east, stopping off whenever we saw sights to explore and then headed west back to the city where we did the the golden circle (waterfall, geyser, blue lagoon). We tended not to stay on the main roads and saw some amazing sights. It's very bleak in some places but really a very beautiful and unusual landscape.

I went for my 40th in May. Bday was in Jan but you need to think about weather and day light, you may be a bit restricted in November. We took the kids and they thought it was great. I wasn't fussed about Rejkavik but away from the city is amazing we stayed on a farm stay which i would recomend, we were self catering but you can get half or full board at some. We stayed mainly around golden circle. Did a tour to go whale spotting but other than that did our own thing. Food is expensive and not great, we were happier when self catering, there were reasonable deals for eating out at lunchtime in bakeries. Need to plan shopping though, outside the city supermarkets are few and far between!

Well we went and had the most amazing time! Thank you for all of your tips. Our highlight was watching the sunrise as we swam in the Blue lagoon - it was brilliant! We also hired a car and drove to Vik, walked on a glacier and then headed back to Rejkavik via the Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysers. Weather was changeable - rain, sleet, snow, hail, rainbows and beautiful sunshine. Didint see the Northern lights unfortunately as there was too much cloud the night we went out.
If you like photography then its a stunning place to visit, the lighting was amazing! Can't wait til our kids are old enough to enjoy it because we'll definitely be going back!! :)
