We're planning on going next year and i'm worried it will be too hot for dd who will be 21/2?

Never been here with toddlers but we have been to some very hot places with very young children. I dont think it matters as long as you take precautions, keep them covered in sun tan lotion, sun protection suits etc and very well hydrated, also keep them out of the sun during the hotest time of the day. I've always been quite proud that when ever we go on holiday my dd's come home the same colour as when they go. My concern with going to India/Sri Lanka would be Malaria, I think I'm correct in saying that Sri Lanka is in the Malaria belt - no idea about India but would imagine so. So they would need to take some form of protection, in fact you all would.

Thanks.

You'll have to be aware that parts of India may be affected by monsoon weather in August. Check a good atlas or Encarta or something for the typical monsoon pattern It's fairly regular.
And yes it will be very hot!

moondog · 09/12/2005 17:32

No,but done Sri Lanka in December with a 2 yr old..

hercules · 09/12/2005 17:33

I know it will be very hot! What I dont know is how my two year old will cope. December is cooler but I can only go in August.

I have been to India in August just at the start of the monsoon season. It was VERY VERY HOT and VERY HUMID (and I'm used to very hot weather). If you plan to go to a single place, or better said, ressort, it should be fine, to go to several places I think is going to be a struggle.

hercules · 09/12/2005 17:38

We were planning to travel around a bit. Dh isnt worried about the heat but I am.

My inital thought after your last post was: Forget it, even for a grown up is very tiring. Moving a few kilometers around takes a life time, even having your own driver. The malaria medication is terrible for a grown up I don't imagine how would it make feel a little one.

But, maybe somebody will come soon and tell you otherwise. I wouldn't do it.

hercules · 09/12/2005 17:43

You are confirming my own thoughts Chandra. Thanks. Just need to persuade DH now!

I haven't taken my kids to Sri Lanka but I have been and I have taken them to Mexico. I feel pretty safe in saying she will have a great time! There were two little girls who were 2 and 4 staying at the same hotel as us nin Mexico and they had a lovely time. It is not hard to keep them out of the sun at the hottest part of the day, eat lunch indoors and maybe go to your room for a while/wander round the hotel a bit.

Have a fab time! I am so jealous, we married in Sri Lanka and I would love to go back!

I'm from Mexico, and believe me, there is a HUGE difference between Mexico and India, particularly regarding to road connections. In other aspects we may well be the same (we even look very much alike!) but I was shocked -and marvelled- at the differences.

Chandra · 10/12/2005 10:05

On a positive side... I think is better if you leave travelling to India until later, once that you have seen India every other trip becomes incredibly dull. So my advice would be to wait

Milly1968 · 10/12/2005 13:58

I've been round south east India during August. We chose this area as it is not affected by the monsoon at this time (I think it comes later) and it was actually a very pleasant time to travel. We went to Mysore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Madurai and a couple of hill station (Ooty and Kodai) when the weather was posivitely English.

While I think these places are definitely doable during August, I would hesitate to take a very small child there or indeed any where else in India. My main worry would be road safety, every time we've been in India we've seen the aftermath of some pretty horrendous road accidents, we've also been on some very, very scarey bus rides. Perhaps things have changed (I haven't been for eight years) however, when we were last there, none of the cars had back seat safety belts, so putting your dd in a car seat would be out of the question.

You can of course travel to a lot of places by train, but if you want to travel to some of the hill stations you will definitely have to get a bus or hire a car with a driver and I don't think I'd do this with a 2 yr old.

I'm still planning to take my kids there but not until they're at least 5 or 6 and then that will be for visiting friends in Delhi or perhaps staying in a hotel in Goa/Kerala.

Good luck!

Thanks for messages. We are planning to go as Dh is determined but only he will go to India and maybe take ds (10 then). I will stay in a nice air con hotel with dd!

Chandra, I know there are huge differences in Sri Lanka and Mexico having been to both! I would not even say 'you' (?) look the same (???).

My post was somewhat confused as we took our kids to Mexico and the two little girls I referred to were staying at hotel we married in, in Sri Lanka, doh!

Anyway, cannot speak for India as have not been but I would take my kids to Sri Lanka for sure

Chandra · 10/12/2005 20:52

No, it's me saying it. When travelling around Asia lots of people asked me if I was Indian, and being at India I couldn't help noticing how simmilar our cultures are, even when our countries sit exactly oposite at each side of the planet, and yes, we look very much the same.

hercules · 11/12/2005 13:35

Westcountrylass, would you take a 21/2 year old to Sri lanka in August?

OP posts:
GoodKingWestCountryLass · 11/12/2005 15:17

Yes I would. With high SFP, SPF suits, spending midday indoors (lunch, nap) and making sure all the relevant precautions were taken I am sure it will be fine.

DD was 11 months when we went to a Mexico (DS was 3.5), not comparing anything other than the temp by the way, and I did worry about it but she was fine, spent most of the days pottering around the beach and in the pool and came back as white as when she left (same for DS)!!!

Both kids had an amazing time, DS still talks about it and remembers the wildlife and going on the plane!
