mine will be at the time of possibly going, 3 1/2 and 20mths. girl and boy.
i so want to go , dh hasnt been, i'd go for 5/6 days, we'd stay in oneof these kinda of apartment places you can rent, i have a friend who has little girl there so i might be able to get a bay sitter thru her, if my kids will let me out of their sight.
not that pushed on shopping, more cultual and sight seeing really and bars!

Hi, i went nyc with my dh in january this year and im going on the 12th jan and taking children aged 15, and twins aged 11. im not taking our 2.5yr old for two reasons really, one because he is severely disabled, unable to eat and drink and registered blind etc, but also because i dont think children that young would get anything from it. There is lots of walking, getting on/off busses and tubes, it is very fast, very busy and not ideal for pushchairs. But this is only my opinion, dont let me put you off.

dizzy34 · 26/11/2005 12:38

sorry i forgot, if you do want to do, have a look at the double tree suites on time square. they are 1 bedroom apartments and ideal for kids. i think the website is www.doubletreesuites.com there is also embassysuites which is a little further away, near the trade centre and battery park. Just so people dont think im awful leaving our little one, he is staying with his nanna whom he loves to bits.

hermykne · 26/11/2005 13:31

dizzy thanks for yourexperience dont think youre awful at all.
will check those links out , i have been there about 8yrs. i know the kids will throw tantrums , get tired etc etc so i am only thinking about it......
get my facts in order first

I have just booked a flight at the end of January. WE we will be taking DS who will be almost 4. DH & I have been desperate to go for years. It is our 10th wedding anniversary, and if we cant take DS we cant go, so we the three of us going. CANT WAIT.

coribells · 26/11/2005 13:36

Dizzy I looked at that link, seems to be a search engine for hotels. Do you know the name of the apartments.?

Earlybird · 26/11/2005 14:01

Based on the things you say you're interested in, I wouldn't take children of this age to New York. Can't imagine they'd happily let you shop for any length of time (unless it was toy shopping) or go to bars.

As far as anything cultural, I'm sure they'd be happy at the Natural History Museum or the Planetarium....but can't imagine they'd be willing to let you go to the adult cultural sights at Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim, etc.

Personally, I'd wait until they're a bit older...

lapsedrunner · 26/11/2005 17:24

Sounds too much like hard work to me.

moondog · 26/11/2005 17:28

Taken my kids all over the world (for work and leisure) since they were literally weeks old. We've always managed to have a nice time, even in big cities like Istanbul,Singapore and Geneva.

philippat · 26/11/2005 17:33

we spent two nights and a day in NYC en route to San Francisco when dd was 10 months. Quite hard work pushing buggy, didn't even try to attempt subway, took quite a lot of taxis (and tried not to think about the fact we didn't have a car seat, well actually we did as dd had travelled in plane in it and later in hire car in SF but they don't fit in yellow cabs...)

We managed to hang out with friends, do some gentle shopping (Tiffanys ), partake of bubble tea, but not a great deal more.

dd is now 4 and i'm just getting to the point of thinking we could take her again. She goes to a lot of museums etc at home (well I work in one!) so would probably enjoy museums, but beware of the cost - the advantage of free entry here is that it doesn't matter if you only stay 10 mins, you'd feel differently if you'd all paid $10.

I'd sort of feel either the heat of summer or the snowy winter would be more difficult times to go.

Truthfully though, if you really want to experience it, go for 3 nights and leave the kids with grandparents?

hermykne · 26/11/2005 20:25

ok its gets more realistic!
philippat - three nights is what i orginally thought and felt i'd like longer as i wont be going for another few years after this venture, if it happens, but maybe a yr or 2 down the line might be a better idea.
ta all

NY is such a great city, you just have to grin a bear the inconveniences (no lifts in most subway stations, etc). We did it with 2 year old twins. Did a lot of walking around with the boys in their strollers, stopping at every playground we passed. They fell asleep in their strollers while we had lunch at Boule...the best timing ever! You can get a babysitter through an agency, but it'll cost an arm and a leg (a one time fee and then $20-$30/hr). Hopefully the place you stay could arrange it or yes, your friend could help you out.

nappybaglady · 28/11/2005 22:47

We went in may with dd - 4y and ds - 19m. It was the first stop on our round world trip. It was FANTASTIC. Kids loved it. so much to do and people v helpful with the kids. Took 2 big (3 wheeler type) buggies on the subway. Wasn't always easy but had great time. More playgrounds than you can believe. Statue of liberty, central park, childrens museum, zoo. Great place. Would thoroughly recommend, even with young kids

Passionflowerinapeartree · 28/11/2005 23:42

Yes I would, when I went last year I thought it would be a great place to take the kids.

Skribble · 29/11/2005 20:57

I have been to new york years ago (without kids). I don't think I would have taken kids t that age mainly due to cost.

For us taking the kids to new york would be a one of so I want to wait until they are really old enough to get more out of it.

Babies are great because you can stick them in the pram and get on with what you want as long as you feed and change them.

Older kids have more sightseeing stamina I suppose. We spent 3 days in Paris with a 5 and 8 yr old and it seemed they were just old enough and we did loads including kids stuff. Not so bad if you can get a bit of babysitting.

ThomCat · 29/11/2005 21:04

Yes, I'd take them and it would be fab,and I'd love it, and they'd love it but then I'd need to go back and do some hard core clubbing and shopping without any children. When D and I have done NYC in the past we're out by 10am shopping and doing the odd sight maybe and then we party till the early hours. So the kids holiday would be lovely but NYC is still very much about the nightlife for me.

piffle · 29/11/2005 21:06

I'd take ds who is 11 but not dd who is 3 she'd hate it
He however would love it!
