I'm in the process of putting together a business plan for a Soft Play Centre in Scotland. I have my own ideas and vision on how it's going to be HOWEVER I would really appreciate others views on what they look for in terms of a good time out with their small people please, in particular what you want, wish or look for in this sort of venue. It's really important for me to seek views of other mums for market research purposes.
In terms of what I have so far I can give you a brief description of my centre, which will:
? Be a children?s soft play centre where the emphasis is on fun and children are treated like VIP?s. Where the play equipment and the general environment is of a high quality, pleasant and clean.
? Have an age range of entry of 0 ? 12 years of age with a dedicated area for babies and toddlers to play.
? Have an emphasis on quality and service, to a level to rival other such centres coupled with a simple but tasty menu of snacks, meals and drinks available to suit both adult and child tastes with the emphasis on healthy but tasty food options for both parents and children. Emphasis on friendly but fast service for food and drinks we've probably all had some experiences when your trying to get something either ordered or heated up for your small people in such places and it's taken an age while you have a grumpy/v. hungry/unhappy child or children on your hands, so a common sense approach in these sorts of situations for customers will apply and the kids will be attended to asap by the staff.
? Be a funky place for parents to hang out and enjoy themselves while their children play with an area dedicated to parents and their wants and needs.
? Also be a party venue with a full range of party services and options for parents and children to choose from.

All views, thoughts and suggestions welcome please, the more the merrier.

misdee I have nothing against young people working in these places but I do get annnoyed by the fact that they employ staff who have no pride or interest in what they are doing.

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 00:41

Actually I ahve been to another soft play place in Scorland and that was about the same price as well.

The most important thing to me is clean toilets - all it takes is someone to go in once an hour with some rubber gloves and a dettol soaked cloth (to be washed not stuck in a bucket in the corner and used until it falls apart).

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 00:44

Have looked at a few others on the net and the going rate seems to be between £3 and £4.50

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 00:46

And very few are over £4

MrsSpoon · 18/08/2006 00:47

These are our local soft play places this one is fab and a bit posh, best for little ones IMO and £3.75 a session , this one seems a bit rougher but my older DS loves it, can't find the price but it was more than the other one, although no limit on time and lots of special offers .

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 00:50

But £7.25 a child for a party , so If I were to hold dd party there it would cost me about £220 for quite a mediocre party!

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 00:51

lol Kingdom of Fun was the one in Scotland that I said I had taken dd to. It is a bit roughand ready but dd loved it.

MrsSpoon · 18/08/2006 00:53

I wouldn't have a party there, every time we go DS2 picks up a party leaflet and the woman at the desk offers to show us round one of the party rooms. IMO too expensive for a party.

MrsSpoon · 18/08/2006 00:54

LOL twinsetandpearls! I was trying to explain Kingdom of Fun to some friends the other day, trying to describe the clientele and I think they just though I was a snob!

cowmad · 18/08/2006 00:55

clean bogs a must!!
regarding food its there to keep customers there as 90min rule only applied on busy days, there is of course a mark up on food but tbh there is loads of wastage..an it has to be there in a main format as customers expect coffee pastries snax party food etc so you may as well do paninnis salads potatoes etc although the time tken up ordering!!im not really complaining, pays wages.
have thought about air con its approx 20k!
so you see why its 4.95 to get in!!
re staff you just have to offer people jobs when you see them i often give people my card if they have been gud to me an i think they will be good..requires balls an a good salary tho

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 00:56

£8.95 a head for a party this is unbelievable!

For dd party this year we are spending

£30 hall hire
£75 for a Zoo to you experience
£30 book people books as presents
£75 food - and this is a themed banquet for 30 kids and their parents!
£25 hall decorations which can be reused

Comes to £235 whicb if I was to ahve it at the soft play place would be £270 and I know which I would rather have.

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 00:59

cowmad when I phoned the zoo to organise dd birthday party they asked what we were doing at her party as the Zoo to you expereince is mainly used by schools rather than private parties, when I told them they asked if I would work for them to revamp their birthday party service!

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 00:59

Sorry another expense to add to party, art and craft stuff for the party about £20 but still cheaper than soft play and much better,

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 01:00

If I founf a good soft play I would pay £4.95 but I only have the one child.

cowmad · 18/08/2006 01:07

in our area they just dont have the mummies that can organise a party like yours twins an pearls they are either 2nd job to pay a mortgage or they live in flats an cant accomodate or plain just dont have the ideas.
well done for thinking of an doing alternatives we live in a big city so many people..average price for church hall here £50
but it is hard coming up with different pary ideas themes.....do u clean up after the zoo 2 u?(LOL)

twinsetandpearls · 18/08/2006 01:19

They don't need to even cost that much, last year I asked the church hall if I could borrow their playgroup toys and friends helped out.

We did art and craft stuff which again cost about £20, £30 for party bags, party food can be done for £40 if you cut down to about 25 kids and then even with £50 for hall hire you are looking at £140 which would do about 20 kids at soft play.

I also work two jobs and study to pay the mortgage! But I do love a kids party, I have even planned and catered other people's for a fee as I get asked to do it all the time.

I am hoping that I won't have to clean up after any animals!

misdee · 18/08/2006 07:31

it costs £5 per child here for junglemania!!

nikkie · 18/08/2006 19:41

One of our local soft plays in really good(other one is a wacky!) it has a gate to stop kids escaping, has armchairs, decent food, decent hot drinks, height limit for children(older ones can play in lazer zone upstairs or on computer games, toddler sessions in term time, party nights once a month £5 including food, decent cordial for kids, older staff all qualified in childcare /first aid etc.
we have a pass for the summer hols £25 unlimited plays (unless it is full then you are asked to leave after 1 1/2 hours!) we have spent a lot of time there this summer (I can sit and read a book or we meet friends for a gossip!)

Only problem is most of seats are further back from soft play and if you want to watch littlies you have to leave your seats

nikkie · 18/08/2006 19:43

also there are lockers for when you end up joining the kids!

cowmad · 18/08/2006 23:48

twins an pearls...like i said ,nice mummy!!why not do this for a job?there is a v.nice lady around this way that does the full kids party thing, for a fee of course inc stories, guitar playing etc,she very good ...runs the whole 2hrs including toilet break remindars.why we wash hands too bloody good to be true really, although i do admit only gud 4 under4s!!an the kids never ask for return visits!!although all the pre-schooler kids have her at least once..an mummys love her!!bit like the mad lady that tells stories on teletubbies...tell you another thing shes £125.0 for 2 hours!

twinsetandpearls · 19/08/2006 18:49

I have catered/planned a few parties and enjoyed it, I did think about going into buiness with my Mum as she is a proffessional cake decorater so with my contacts and ideas and her talent we could do well. But my main career is teaching which I love and takes a lot of my time and I also have a second job in early years - as you saw on the other thread. I am also quite involved in local politics and ahve ambitions to take that further as well as my studies.

To run business takes time, dedication and commitment and after all of the above and my family I just don't have it.

But I do enjoy doing the odd party, am currebtly in the middle of planning dd party and have spent the day making invites out of fun fur!

twinsetandpearls · 19/08/2006 18:51

I wouldn't so musical parties though , my voice is awful!

twinsetandpearls · 19/08/2006 18:52

Every time i have hired a kids entertainer though and they have seen the themed foof, decorations, activities they have asked me if I want to go into business!
