Wow - walking at 9 months! That's great! Have a lovely holiday. Hope the flight goes well for you.

debka - after one hideous hired car seat experience, we always take our own seats in the hold now.

A car hire company tried to give us a group 1 seat for our 7 week old DD; it was totally unsuitable, filthy dirty and torn. Plus you never know what's happened to them previously.

For the journey from the airport, we put DD in her sling with my seatbelt under it. Not remotely safe, but better than nothing and certainly better than a tiny infant in an upright seat! It didn't even recline! For the rest of the trip we borrowed a stage 0 off friends. Never again!

hi bread and honey have flown with a few airlines including easyjet ... if you are hiring a car it's prob worth taking a seat tho as hire ones can be awful, just wrapit up well and book it in.

AnnieLobeseder · 30/05/2011 22:33

We wrap ours in bubble wrap. They are very well-travelled car seats!

I have flown monthly with DD3 since she was about 3 weeks old (she's now 2.3). Mostly with EasyJet, but also with Aer Lingus. With Easy (obviously until she was 2) with one exception I have had a spare seat next to me which I just plonked her on once the seatbelt lights had gone off. IME flying with small children and babies is as bad as YOU let it be. DD3 has never been a problem on any of the flights - I always make sure I have a couple of books, set of keys and lots of little pots of eats for her. She now has her own seat but since about 12m she's also sat and watched rubbish on my iPod or slept.

I travelled extensively with my older three children when they were small as well - Australia a lot, starting with a 6m, 2.5 and 3.5 and they were fine. I have never seen a car seat on a plane though. Easy are great (again, IME) with children and you can bundle car seat, buggy, travel cot etc into the hold regardless of any baggage allowance. I also would NOT recommend hiring a car seat (certainly here in Spain) as you seriously cannot be sure what you will get, but the guardia will come down on you big time if they see you driving with the wrong type.

breadandhoney · 31/05/2011 09:45

We will definitely take our own car seat for the hire car, as I wouldn't want to be let down when we get there! IME hiring cars can be stressful enough - we had an unbelievably bad experience in San Francisco a couple of years ago - and that was without a baby!! Car rental is such a simple concept - it should be easy, but for some reason it was an utter shambles, which resulted in us queuing for 2 HOURS then ending up with a convertible whose roof wouldn't go down Hmm

Hadn't thought about bubble-wrapping the car seat - good idea! As I understand it, we don't have to let EasyJet know in advance that we are planning to check in a car seat and buggy. Is this correct?

breadandhoney · 31/05/2011 09:47

RockStock travelling to Australia with 3 young children. I hope I am able to do the same in a few years! Smile

babyjames · 31/05/2011 13:54

Wow good to hear some positive stories :) I'm feeling much more relaxed about it all now we have the seat thing sorted out. I'm going to bubble wrap the car seat like someone suggested as thats a good idea. Maybe pack some nappies around it!

Breadandhoney no - you definitely don't need to let easyJet know in advance about seat, buggy (and travel cot if you're taking), just check them in when you check your bags in. Although I always take the buggy to the plane and hand it over then. I have never bubble wrapped the seat (not least because I use it getting to the airport...), i just do up the straps and tighten them then tie the loose bit in with lap bit iyswim.

And Australia with the kids was no problem. The first time was not my finest flight, but I flew with a departure mid afternoon from the UK and that was a HUGE mistake! Every time since I flew on the 10pm ish flight which worked perfectly, stopped in HK or Singapore and then got another evening flight out, arriving in Australia around 6/7am. Breakfast, beach, lunch - all sorted!! I've done it 14 times with the three older ones and taking DD3 (who will be just 3) next year - night flights booked already.

AnnieLobeseder · 31/05/2011 22:37

We use the car seats on the way to the airport too, but take long sheets of bubble wrap and tape with us and wrap them quickly as we queue to check in. It doesn't have to be a professional job, but saves on the bumps and scrapes.

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 31/05/2011 22:53

Annie I'm always travelling on my own with DD3 with a thousand bits of luggage and assorted crap and I'm a lazy bint and can't be arsed to do sensible stuff like that and not that bothered about bumps and scrapes, although haven't noticed any.

breadandhoney · 01/06/2011 09:49

Wow, I am in awe. 14 trips to australia with the kids! I am letting dh read that tonight! He seems to be under the impression that our travelling days are over and all we'll be doing for the next 10 years is road trips around Ireland. All very nice and everything but my feet have been itching since I got pregnant. A week in Majorca isn't much but I am so excited about it!

We'll maybe bubble wrap our second seat and take it with us. That way it'll be ready in advance and there will be no fussing about at the airport.

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 01/06/2011 10:17

Breadandhoney travelling with children is as bad as YOU let it be. I've done it so often it's almost easier than a trip to Ikea!! Prep is all that's needed. iPod/iPad are hugely helpful, small favourite toys/keys, and a selection of nibbly bits in little pots always rescue potential flare ups... The airlines will fill beakers/bottles with water and always make sure you have enough wipes/nappies and muslins (if used). Change of clothes for small peeps and a top for me (just in case..).

I have always found that if the adults are stressed when travelling, the DC will be twice as stressed. Have a wonderful time in Majorca, it's a fab place for children, and show DH how easy it is Wink.

Oh - and when you get there, buy a tube of Fenistil from the chemist - it is THE best gel for mosquito bites. I live in Spain and have tried and tested all of them. That does the trick immediately.

breadandhoney · 01/06/2011 13:56

Thank you for the tip! I'll definitely pick up a tube of that! I've never been to Majorca so I hope you're right and we'll enjoy it. We've rented a villa in Cala D'Or, which looks lovely. Thanks for the help :)
