Last family holiday - something special

Ok DS finishes his GCSE's next summer and we are looking to travel for the first 3 weeks of July. We'd like something special as it might well be our last real holiday, no doubt he will want to come in the future if we are paying but he is also wanting to volunteer and travel with friends blah blah, so this is it Sad.
Any suggestions of something memorable without financially killing us? TIA

Depends on whether you lkie lazy holidays or active ones.
I have always fancied going on a Safari.
Cruise... Not my cup of tea, i think i would feel trapped.
Niagra falls
Caribbean island

Canadian Rockies
We went to Mauritius on our honeymoon.... Fantastic

We did a sailing holiday in Kenya last year, plus 3 day safari. If your DS is a teenager who joins in he'd love it. And you'd get a chance to try dinghy sailing/windsurfing yourself.

I would get a motorhome and travel California/Nevada. San Francisco, Yosemite. Down Highway 1 to Big Sur, Santa Barbara onto LA. You could fit in Las Vegas somewhere.

Or somewhere like Thailand or Indonesa as pretty cheap once you are there.

We live in the middle east and so have done Thailand, Mauritus etc, although there is always more to be visited it has to be said. Love the idea of a camper van although looking at flights and times from here its looking very very expensive.
Sailing in Kenya sounds fab. Ds wanted to a safari but DH not really into that but would suck it up under duress Grin. We have been on sunsail holidays before but never sailed for more than a day getting off at night, that would be fun. do you have any details please WWWYou?
All other suggestions still gratefully received.

Neilson have a resort in Kenya where you can take sailing lessons, or sail their boats if you're already qualified but sleep on land. YOu can get as involved as much or as little as you want. Or you can combine a flotilla holiday and a landbased holiday in the resort i think.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 21/05/2011 21:36

That's where we went, Kiwinyc. They don't do flotillas, though - for one thing, I very much doubt insurance cover would be possible in those seas!

look at some of the family adventure holidays for ideas, treking in kenya up mts or cycling in thailand or veitnam..?

Norway. North of Norway. Midnight sun. Hiking in the mountains.

We are doing this this year. DS finishes GCSEs and DD joins us from Uni (has not been with us for last 2 summers).

We looked at a villa in Corsica, Florida and all-inclusives with water sports etc. Were very taken with some Neilson Adventure holidays, and looked at cruising Norway or Arctic.

We have settled on a 7 night safari in Kenya followed by 5 nights on beach in Mombassa (first 2 weeks July). As we booked last October we got a great deal - cheaper than a lot of the above! (For the last 24 years we have been camping in France). It was the one holiday that got everyone excited, and we will have the safari van just for the 4 of us.
